The British don't speak German like that. Translation isn't just about precision. It's also about audience. A British character in a German translation often doesn't sound British. They sound like a German person's idea of a British person. The same goes for Americans. German audiences have cultural expectations about how British and American people speak. They expect certain rhythms, certain jokes, certain kinds of politeness, a particular flavour of sarcasm. And translating dialogue means navigating those expectations without turning the characters into cultural caricatures. You can't solve this by sprinkling well, mate and bloody hell into German sentences and calling it a day. That's not localisation. That's a fancy dress party. You have to understand what the dialogue does. How a British person uses understatement. How an American expresses enthusiasm. How politeness, humour, irritation and intimacy work differently across cultures. And then you have to find a way to make those things work for your audience without losing the character in translation. Sometimes precision means preserving the unfamiliar. Sometimes it means adapting the expression so the audience experiences the same effect. Knowing which is which requires judgement, cultural knowledge and a rather good ear. AI can produce German words that look perfectly plausible. But plausible isn't the same as authentic, and fluent isn't the same as culturally convincing. A translation doesn't just carry words from one language to another. It carries people across cultural borders. And people are considerably more complicated than dictionaries. 🐙 Help me keep translation human: support my fundraiser.. Okay, after a week of lurking and somewhat soft-launching myself into the sunny.garden, I guess it's time for a proper #introduction to you wonderful people. Im Dave, I live in Germany, and like so many others these past days I came here from the forkiverse. I already appreciate the vibe here in the garden very much. I'm, among others, into #movies and #books, truly everything #arts and #culture, and would like some recommendations about who or what to follow. I love to see you all sharing about your projects of arts and crafts. You can expect some #photography in my feed, but apart from that I probably won't post very regularly. That is, if you don't count in replies. I do reply quite a lot and love to exchange thoughts and knowledge. Looking forward to still getting to know this place a little better every time I'm on. Have a great day, y'all!
