@davidism who needs a lockfile when you can ask an LLM to maintain your dependencies?

@evacide@hachyderm.io can't imagine this making sense, but I stocked up on way too much matzoh flour, so a good time to experiment!

@grimalkina and you do incredible work making it more accessible and relevant for devs. Your Dev Thriving work was (and still is) extremely valuable and impactful for me.
Thank you!

@grimalkina I just realized that I had a passionate discussion with a colleague yesterday about the importance of technical vocab and how we must teach it to our juniors, so that they can clearly and accurately describe their ideas; while at the same time, I haven't the vocabulary to discuss everyday social interactions.

@HalvarFlake@mastodon.social this is fantastic!
And seems like a very good reason to be proud!

@sethmlarson @brettcannon I'll admit until now I've only used lockfiles to avoid annoying CI failures. I have some reading to do now...
Replying to
@joxean@mastodon.social that'll probably finally get me over the hurdle and to Linux on the desktop

@mwichary@mastodon.online fair. Though I still miss proper typography in those. But yeah, your original post resonates much more in that context.

@ct_bergstrom@fediscience.org do the crows ever get upset if they swoop you and you have no food for them?

@hynek@mastodon.social the wait is over, but now that I watched the video - the wait for the next one starts again!
Great video, as usual.

@TechConnectify@mas.to just wanted to say that the video was delightful, and I never would've read an article about door closers.
Thanks for making your awesome videos!
The Red Bull Wololo Londinium final was insane.
And I still can't believe I'm watching this much Age of Empires 2...

@mwichary@mastodon.online my immediate reaction is "people like those interfaces?"
As a dev, I want much richer and more structured interactions with my code editor than what the chat offers. Both in user input and LLM outputs.

@ambv@mastodon.social listening as I'm writing this...
I was looking forward to the mention of backslash at the end of raw strings, and you brought it up, but I still don't understand why it isn't allowed.
After all - they don't escape anything in raw strings.

@nikitonsky@mastodon.online This was a fantastic read, thank you. And I'm definitely going to try this out.
Also, have you ever seen Source Insight?
Their highlighting and typography are _wild_!

@tonroosendaal Happy birthday!
I haven't used Blender in many years, but it _is_ what got me into Python...
Based on the first episode, Snowball Earth explores what'd happen if Shinji got in the damn Gundam and then failed to do a Gunbuster.

@sethmlarson @brettcannon any recommendations on how to use those attestations in production? I found the format docs, but I'm not sure what to do with the data without supporting tooling (installers or index mirrors that block installing if the data goes missing?)
That said, I'll start reviewing lockfiles more carefully.

@ambv@mastodon.social Oh, wow, I somehow missed that, even though this has bugged me for years...
The thing is, it escapes the quote in a _very_ weird way. I just ran your example, and it prints:
>>> print(r"A\"B")
A\"B
And... I never realized you can actually do that. So I always thought it's just a legacy tokenizer issue. But since it actually works inside a literal string, I guess it can't be changed...

@davidism most of my experience with them is at work. And while I believe I get some good use out of them, I am also faced with truly terrible PRs that are clearly generated rather than written.
The ability to generate massive quantities of almost-decent-at-first-glance code and prose is truly unparalleled. I'm sorry you (and so many others) have to deal with this shit.

@plexus@toot.cat docs, please!
Sure, LLMs are useful for quickly finding things, but they get _so much_ wrong, and don't help you build skills.
I usually check the docs after getting the recommendations from the LLM (or the code), and make sure things make sense and are done well.
Well-documented projects make it easy. Badly documented projects force me to either dig into the source-code, or semi-blindly rely on what the LLM produced.
TIL about eget. It automatically installs binaries from Github releases. Huge timesaver!

A good indicator of LLM generated docstrings is when you suddenly see reST formatting (specifically the double backticks) in a company where no one even knows what it is...

I want tools to express software architecture & design. Mermaid isn't it.
