@hannah@posts.rat.pictures when I was a kid I read many weird fantasy novels that were about entire empires going mad, about times of chaos when everyone was beset by confusion, and so forth. and I thought stuff like that would never happen. But now it's happening. The Age of Madness is here.

RE: https://noc.social/@todayilearned/117333358695367857 but how many other snails remained glued to cards in diapause for untold years (decades? centuries? aeons?) , but their diapause unrecognized?

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org and put a big red button on it with a sign that says "PRESS BUTTON TO MAKE RADIO ACTIVE"

@dantheclamman@scicomm.xyz science discovered that CFCs caused the ozone hole, that fossil fuel industries caused global warming, that DDT caused the near-extinction of many birds of prey ... and as a result, rich people hate science.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @grumpasaurus@infosec.exchange 1/2 Although this is not a good way to transition away from wet climate crops, and Schiff et al are right to be concerned about people's livelyhoods, it should be recalled that peaches are a wet climate crop, requiring much water to grow, and more to process. Wet climate crops like peaches are a major reason the CA central valley imports lots of water from the much drier Colorado River basin. That would be a bad idea in a stable climate,

@jschauma@mstdn.social no real person used vapid marketing terms like "content" to refer to writing or websites prior to about 2005.

@futurebird if trig functions are just rat i/o , do mice use trig functions to control the cursor?

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @grumpasaurus@infosec.exchange 2/2 but in a climate getting drier and hotter due to fossil fuels, growing wet climate crops in dry areas is inviting disaster. Here's to hoping the peaches won't be replaced by yet another wet climate crop (of which too many remain in CA's central valley).

@redsad@ohai.social you: tooting jokes laughed at by nearly a dozen people. me: tooting secret jokes nobody notices, that fly under everyone's radar, stealth jokes ...

@fribbledom@mastodon.social never fear. Now that AI has set a new precedent by forcing RAM prices to double every 6 months, soon the era of needing to optimize for minimal memory use will return!

@futurebird 2/2 A bit later they came to a section with smaller, slightly different bones. The second paleontologist identified these as distal ends of humera. The first paleontologist laughed, and said "I assume that's the punch line?" But the second replied: "No, the punch line is further along, because the manual bones are much smaller."

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space @zwol@masto.hackers.town @jwz@mastodon.social @jspath55@chaos.social after the great renaming there came the Great Delete ... *sigh* I was hoping someone else had copies ...

@futurebird@sauropods.win @Bumblefish@mastodon.scot stare into the Eyes of Agon!

@geekysteven@beige.party actually energy comes from a nearby star; it only passes through space due to astrographical happenstance and we evolved on a planet some distance away from the star. And we don't summon energy; move the panels and the energy won't change its course. We just place the panels in the way of the energy (that's why it's best if they're perpendicular to the flow). The panels convert the energy into electrical form. Anyway, plants convert the same energy into sugar! How sweet is that?

@quinn@social.circl.lu ever since the Mayflower ...

@dantheclamman@scicomm.xyz wait a minute. "Unladen"? Do scallops carry ladels often enough for the distinction of not having one to be important to specify? If so, whatever for?

@SunDancer@metalhead.club @fribbledom@mastodon.social ironically, most of the games would immediately run some code that was functionally speaking "hey fuck DOS and 8-bit real 8086 mode, we're running our own custom special purpose 32 bit protected mode operating system, just so we can use that honkin 4 megabytes of RAM! "

@aparrish looks like a hymn of worship dedicated to an elephant sized cicada.

@ironicbadger behold the jagged teeth of the dog that eat all the dogfood!

@futurebird@sauropods.win tell them to get some Brown Recluses. Loxosceles *loooves* roaches. Almost as much as they love termites.

@rnd@toot.cat 2/2 In the eyes of some people, this means C's type system is not strongly typed. Philosophical implications aside, if you expect C to be strongly typed, and your expectations of "strongly typed" are informed by any language(s) other than C, C's type system will give you many nasty surprises.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I can't help but wonder how much of the debris ends up in our lungs.

@futurebird @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla I will note that in the rest of the world, they have a sport called futbol, which is played on a field that is exactly one hectare. Fortunately, futbol-sized hail is rather rarer than any of the sizes in the above chart.

@cwebber@social.coop my software is pinned to the fjords.

@Edmonds_Scanner@universeodon.com I guess this advice tidbit doesn't take into account the good old "wild surge" table of 2nd edition D&D. WOOWEEE was that fun. But not a recipe for long life. Definitely not.

@eunews@mastodon.social good.

@KanaMauna@sauropods.win puts a whole new look on that old saying, "the best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago. The second best time is , uh, now ..."

@scott@sfba.social utah, being utah, is the 2nd driest state in the USA, by precipitation ... did anyone say where all the water was expected to come from?

@futurebird@sauropods.win in other news, I think cutting off the tarsi of the ants changed the way the ants walked in an extra, unaccounted for way. A biomechanical pollution of the stats. The experiment would have been better done with stilts of two or more different lengths and no tarsi removal.

@Da_Gut@dice.camp @futurebird@sauropods.win oh yes, wolf spiders have reflective backing in their eyes and furry clawed feet just like sweet little kittens. And by the way, they don't actually hunt wolves. That's just a name.

@TheDinosaurDave@sauropods.win Gigantspinosaurus?

@redsad@ohai.social as someone who has read a lot of weird novels that are apparently not very often , I do that often.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I don't have children, but given how the future has turned out, I sure hope I die before I reach age 65.

@rnd@toot.cat 1/2 uh, since most of the code I wrote was in C, and most of the remainder was in the multifarious languages associated with C (make, imake, sh, C++, M4, sed, awk, ...), I am obligated to point out that C's type system has many clauses, some famous and some infamous, in which the behavior is implementation-defined (which means your implementation was expected to document the behavior, but probably didn't), or undefined behavior, which means anything can happen.

@overholt@glammr.us at one normal per polygon, that's fewer polygons than even a cybertruck. Sad.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I guess ants just aren't small enough for you anymore.

@Flowermob@mastodon.social climate denial is not an education deficiency. It is a moral deficiency.

@TazPoltorak@fosstodon.org I came to love spicy food, but I will always hate cars, and am unable agree with those who would like them to move or make noise.
