They don't produce emotion, real opinion, or even originality, just stuff. And we're being told that the pace of humanity in producing "stuff", "content", is the limiting factor and something to be overcome. That everyone's goal is "produce more, faster". You might produce visual art, or music. You could be a writer on all manner of topics. You might get on camera to tell jokes, or give opinion. Whatever you do, *please* respect yourself enough to call it what it is. It's *not* mere "content".

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk Do not be content with ‘content’ - agreed.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk Preach! I feel mostly the same way about "product" as I do about "content". It is the supply-side fulfillment of a perceived market demand, utterly soulless.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk And how about 'mouse'? Or 'gay'? Language evolves and words change in meaning.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk Content is produced for consumption as a means of securing value. Art is made by people to express or contain all of the terrible beauty of the human condition, and then some, and is one of the - surprisingly few! - things that all societies share in common. That moneyed actors try to conflate the two by saying their regurgitating algorithms can make art says more about their humanity than that of their special collections of 1s and 0s.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk The rot was advanced when they starting giving famous people "columns" in newspapers, merely because they were famous.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk most “content creators” are no different than the AI slop machine. Influencers and other degenerates aren’t worth the time denigrating them.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk And what is being filled is "the attention-space" of other people. If "content creators" are just filling attention-space for the sake of filling attention-space (which = ad dollars) instead of providing something of value to the viewer, then they are just extractors. Not a good way to be in the world. Not a good way to be a good neighbor. The moral thing to do is to make content that has an actual hope of being of value to someone. Anything less is selfish extraction.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk Maybe a solution would be to lean into specifics like others said. For YouTube specifically they're a "video creator", and if there's more things they create (music, artwork, etc.) maybe a "media creator" or "multi-media creator"? Also people could say they're a creator/creative and listing the media they make. A possible downside is it could provide a smokescreen for influencer content, but people do look for reviews. Creators SHOULD be disclosing sponsors anyways

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk "Content" is the stuff you put around advertisements so people will pay attention. It's putting *all* the importance on the ads rather than the actual creative work. It's no wonder c-suites and boards are so hell-bent on forcing AI into everything.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk This takes me back to a phrase I've been tossing around a bit and I _love_ sharing it: Fuck your content, we want art. I even had it put on a t-shirt just because it brings me so much joy.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk When we had print media and limited broadcast space as the main means of information dissemination the space that needed to be filled was theoretically infinite, but highly constrained in practice. There was a limited containment space, and "content" needed to fill it. Unfortunately, in the online digital age the containment has effectively gone, and it has the capacity for infinite content. It shows.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk The same people were talking about "product" a few years ago. Also "great products". No mention of what they do, what their "product" was for. Just churning out "product".

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk Yep, same. I've always hated the term ". "content". It is demeaning somehow. The sort of term MBAs and other soulless creatures use to describe what they cannot understand.
