Tobacco, From Seed to Smoke: Day 0 I'm using biodegradable seed starting cells for this one. They will hopefully enable me to transplant the seedlings with minimal disturbance to the roots. The real reason I'm using them is because I found them on the side of the road, so they were free. The seed starting mix for thirty of the cells is made of Jiffy seed starting pellets left over from a previous project. The remaining ten cells are filled with a seed starting mix that I also found on the side of the road, but in a separate incident. It has some larger pieces in the mix than I would prefer for this sort of project, but I think it will still work for my purposes. Tobacco seeds need light to germinate, so I tore open a seed pod and sprinkled some seeds on top of each cell. The particular cultivar I'm using for this project is called "Tofta." It's an air-cured Swedish strain that is relatively small (around four feet high) and adapted to a short growing season. (It is supposed to reach maturity in about two months.) This seed is extremely fresh and likely has a very high germination rate, so I probably sowed far more than I needed to. I gently watered the seeds in with a spray bottle set to mist and placed the whole thing on a heat mat. I'll update when the first seeds begin to germinate.
