💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: ✍️🧠 A new study challenges the idea that people are born with a skilled dominant hand, showing instead that hand dominance develops through repeated practice. Researchers at Johns Hopkins and UCLA found that when tasks are novel both hands perform equally well, and that hand preference comes first and skill follows, not the reverse. 👉 https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/people-arent-born-with-as-righties-or-lefties-they-develop-hand-dominance-with-practice-a-new-study-suggests-180989168/ #brains #science #neuroscience #learning #childdevelopment #psychology #johnshopkins #UCLA #research #study

People Aren't Born as Righties or Lefties—They Develop Hand Dominance With Practice, a New Study Suggests

Humans do have a biological preference for using one side of their body, which might prime them for using limbs on that side for complex motor tasks like writing—and honing those skills over time

I'm fairly sure most folks I interact with would agree with the statement "LLMs cannot think." pretty uncontroversially. Here's a question for you, though: how do we feel about this statement? "Brains cannot think." (Comments and shares encouraged.) #poll #llm #llms #ai #brains #intelligence #cognition #philosophy #goku

The idea that the rise of tech means today's young people are less intelligent than previous generations is rife – but wrong, says neuroscientist Dean Burnett

Human brains light up for chimp voices in a way no one expected

Humans don’t just recognize each other’s voices—our brains also light up for the calls of chimpanzees, hinting at ancient communication roots shared with our closest primate relatives. Researchers found a specialized region in the auditory cortex that reacts distinctly to chimp vocalizations, but not to those of bonobos or macaques, revealing an unexpected mix of evolutionary and acoustic influences.
