#inktober 12. “Toss”. Family reunions have switched to Corn Hole now but when I was a kid the tossing game was Horseshoes, with lots of warnings to stay clear lest you get an iron thrown into your head (from the generation that grew up throwing genuine darts unsupervised in the basement and DID once accidentally get one stuck in their younger sibling’s temple). #lineasketch

#inktober 4. One of my earliest memories (like, age 3 or 4, so no idea how accurate) - one of my parents’ friends held a piece of this kind of cactus out to me as a curiosity; I reached out to touch it and ended up crying. I recall my dad being mad at the friend… #lineasketch

RE: https://circumstances.run/@davidgerard/117399321043647658 iirc, Ozymandius was the first poem I ever memorized on my own initiative. Wish I could remember exactly when and why…

They now make table saws that stop instantly the moment they touch human skin. I never would have thought of that! I’m delighted. Adding this to my mental list of things that have gotten better in my lifetime. (The fact that kids can get vaccinated for chicken pox is also on the list. And that the hole in the ozone layer is shrinking!)

The Conversation U.S. (@TheConversationUS@newsie.social)

How Easter Island's giant statues were transported remained unsolved for decades. Physics, morphological analysis and a comprehensive 3D map now show the moai, or statues, were "walked" upright across the landscape using principles of lateral oscillation. https://theconversation.com/drones-physics-and-rats-studies-show-how-the-people-of-rapa-nui-made-and-moved-the-giant-statues-and-what-caused-the-islands-deforestation-270023
