PPS: concerning mnemonics and Magic, there's this book by Giordano Bruno:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_umbris_idearum
"In this book, he proposes a system integrating mnemonics, Ficinian psychology, and hermetic magic."
Err, yes, this is the guy a big org with German sceptics is named after...

PPPS and out: Renaissance magic was also big into speaking with "intelligences", plain old necromancy, but also demons (somewhat a short-term prospect given the Not-Spanish inquisitions were around), angels (again, short-term prospect) and some beings inbetween. Reminds me somewhat of the AI craze, though I guess Messiers Agrippa et al. mainly needed investors for their alchemical projects. Next-gen fission, anyone?
Yes, I perused this as a Podcast:

Even if we only look at AFAB people with AN trying to hack their appearance, starvation also negates some of the changes during puberty, though I'd have to look up the incidence of gender dysphoria "masquerading" as AN. [2/3]

@Doomscroll@zirk.us @cstross@wandering.shop PS: Come to think about it, you could conceptualize the facehitting trend as self-injuruos behaviour and/or an extreme form of stimming, which doesn't make it easier.
In other news, just back from the Magic (the supernatural belief system, not the game) exhibition in Bremen, was quite nice, though I guess me Infodumping about Renaissance mnemonics was somewhat unnerving for bystanders...

@Doomscroll@zirk.us @cstross@wandering.shop Actually, anorexia nervosa is basically just a description of an behaviour (IIRC restriction of caloric food intake combined with physical exercise), which doesn't say much about the etiology. Also, while some think AN is a culture-bound phenomenon restricted to Western culture, it's easier to find a culture that hasn't some tradition of starving oneself or at least fasting (err, yes, we're one week into Lent, which coindeces with Ramadan this year).[1/3]

Sitting in the toilet in the hostel, late at night, and you realize while you have some idea why eusociality developed in Hymenoptera (namely, haplodiploid sex determination), you have no Idea why it happened in Blattodea.
Guess I'll read it up and lecture the cockroaches tonight...
On another note, good Tips for squatting?

So today I had to explain the rationalist community to a blissfully ignorant friend and came up with "like Ayn Rand, but with more mathematics and more drugs". Err.
