While renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels in nearly all circumstances, fossil fuels are more profitable, because useful reserves are limited and can each be monopolised by a single corporation, while prices can suddenly take flight in times of war or chaos. Almost all the very rich are heavily invested in them. #climateChange #climateCatastrophe #climateEmergency #climateBreakdown #tippingPoint https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/aug/05/murderous-heat-climate-disaster-mediterranean-life-radical-right

The terrifying scenes we’ve seen so far this summer are the latest part of a pernicious long-term pattern. Across the world, the past 11 years have been the 11 hottest ever recorded – and with a super strength El Niño forming in the Pacific which could pour yet more fuel on the fire, that trend is all but certain to continue. The climate emergency is here – and no one can say they didn’t see it coming. #climateChange #climateCatastrophe #climateEmergency #climateBreakdown #tippingPoint https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/aug/08/burning-summer-climate-denial-green-policies-sadiq-khan

“The climate alarm is blaring, from every direction. Around the world, climate-driven disasters are reaching nightmare proportions, as the costs of humanity’s addiction to burning coal, oil and gas keep spiraling upwards. As the world speeds towards 2C of global heating, the risks of extreme weather disasters and climate tipping points are increasing fast. But current economic models used by governments and financial institutions entirely miss such shocks. This is because the models assume the future will behave like the past, despite the burning of fossil fuels pushing the climate system into uncharted territory.

Chronic ocean heating is fuelling a “staggering and deeply concerning” loss of marine life, a study has found, with fish levels falling by 7.2% from as little as 0.1C of warming per decade.

Global heating accelerated from a steady rate of less than 0.2C per decade between 1970 and 2015 to about 0.35C per decade over the past 10 years. The rate is higher than scientists have seen since they started systematically taking the Earth’s temperature in 1880.

Globally, the research found ocean levels are an average of 30cm higher than previously believed, but in some areas of the global south, including south-east Asia and the Indo-Pacific, they may be 100-150cm higher than previously thought.

Following a relative sea level rise of 1 metre, it is estimated that 37% more coastal areas will fall below sea level, affecting up to 132 million individuals.

As climate disasters drive up the price of home insurance, three US states are considering empowering their state prosecutors to sue major polluters for their role in those rising costs.

We know that the years ahead are going to be dramatically more dangerous, tragically, when it comes to climate disasters, and we can’t allow our residents, our small businesses, to be left holding the bag.

Over the past two decades, seaweed blooms have expanded by a staggering 13.4% a year in the tropical Atlantic and western Pacific, with the most dramatic increases occurring after 2008, according to researchers at the University of South Florida.

This shift could darken the waters below, changing their ecology and geochemistry, and may also accelerate climate breakdown.

In a reversal from previous years’ pollution reductions, the United States spewed 2.4% more heat-trapping gases from the burning of fossil fuels in 2025 than in the year before.

The increase in greenhouse gas emissions is attributable to a combination of a cool winter, the explosive growth of datacenters and cryptocurrency mining, and higher natural gas prices.

In 2022 was de temperatuur van de oceanen de hoogste ooit gemeten. En in het voorjaar van 2023 was het alweer warmer. Zeewater warmt veel langzamer op dan lucht. Dat maakt de opwarming van de oceanen nog dreigender.
