Not sure if this is helpful or still too technical, but take a look: https://selfhosting.sh/foundations/getting-started/

My only issue is with banking apps and our national ID app which is very useful. I know some work, but I haven't seen all that I have listed, so I would have to be the guinea pig :) I actually have an older Pixel phone with a shattered screen, I was planning to have it repaired, so I guess that's where I can test GrapheneOS safely.

As for passwords, well, I wont talk about that. It’s not good but still not worst practices at least. Paper notebook? ;)

My Bitwarden and Proton Pass also require Yubikey to be present when logging in on a new device.

By “same platform” do you mean keeping them in the same app or the same system (e.g., my Android smartphone)? I used to use Authy, but after I bought the paid subscription for Bitwarden I moved my TOTP codes there (and later to Proton Pass) because it was so convenient.

Thanks for telling me about Betterbird. I see I can run it at the same time as Thunderbird which naturally fits my workflow described above 😅

I am thinking of self-hosting some stuff right now, but that’s mainy OneDrive/Google Drive replacement and Google Photos replacement. I could maybe self-host Bitwarden, too. Email? Nope. I know there’s A LOT of work with that, with the domains (so my emails don’t get rejected by other parties), with spam filters and so on. I will leave that to the professionals, it’s too important. File storage is for me, but email is for communication with others. So congratulations if you got that working :)

If you're that paranoid you can host it yourself. https://github.com/mozilla-services/syncstorage-rs?tab=readme-ov-file https://mozilla-services.github.io/syncstorage-rs/ It's open source.

I have a similar setup. My PC has disks formatted in Btrfs, so I get copy on write snapshots of my system disk, then have a local Restic backup on a secondary disk and then have an off-site Restic backup in the cloud on the Storage Box. Thanks for pointing me to Paperless, never heard of it, it seems like it could be useful. I wonder how it deals with languages other than English, if at all.

I meant that I can buy one of those Radeons dedicated to AI work, like the ASRock Radeon AI PRO R9700 Creator 32GB GDDR6. If I need to. Currently my Ryzen iGPU is all I need, because all I need is to see the graphical desktop environment on my screen ;) It does the job well. I use Claude Code as well and I am slightly concerned with that ID verification news, even more so because of the technology partner that they chose.

Say I have a GPU with 32GB VRAM and I am on Linux, what local LLM would be good for coding? Currently I just have an iGPU ;) but that's always an option, albeit a very expensive one.

Help with setting up my hard drives for my desktop PC and my server So I have a new desktop PC and my old desktop PC that was broken for some time, now revived and I want to make it a home server and selfhost various apps. I’m running Debian Trixie and plan to run the same (but headless) on the server. My old PC had a 1TB SATA SSD (one of the Samsung EVO models from around 2013/2014). It’s an old drive and it’s been in use probably for 8 years in total (initially as the system disk, then for local backup). The motherboard only has 1 m2 slot with PCIe x3. My new PC has two 2TB nvmes, the high end Samsung 9100 PRO and Samsung 990 PRO. The first disk is my system disk so it stays. But the 990 currently is almost empty and used only for a local Restic backup. I over purchased, wasn’t sure which one to keep and my return window passed so both stayed. I also have an external 2TB SSD on USB 3. Now I have a few scenarios in mind and I’m having trouble making a decision. I need a 3-2-1 backup solution on both machines. I won’t have too many services and won’t have much traffic. I can put the 1TB SATA SSD in the server, make it the system disk. Then have the 2TB USB SSD for local backup. Or backup over SFTP to my desktop’s 990. The desktop PC stays as is with two nvme disks. I can move the 990 PRO from my desktop PC to the server and make it the system disk. I’d use the SATA SSD in one computer and the USB SSD in the other one for local backup. My server won’t utilize 990’s speed because of PCIe x3 being the ceiling. There are various combinations and I suffer from decision paralysis. Re the backup, I currently do hourly local backups and daily cloud backups. I’d rather not buy another disk due to how expensive they are. I don’t have that much data, I won’t even use 1TB. I probably have less than 250GB counting all my documents, important files, ebooks, photos. Any hints?

Selfhosting as a Linux newbie - Ubuntu Server LTS or Debian 13? I use Debian as my daily driver, but I’m still a newbie. I would like to selfhost a few apps, initially on a VPS, but I will probably move to a local PC once I diagnose what is broken with my old computer. The guides at https://selfhosting.sh/ always recommend Ubuntu Server LTS for newbies, but Ubuntu seems to have bad PR and I already run Debian on my home PC. On one hand, I am a newbie and I guess Ubuntu might be easier to set up and maintain. Though, I don’t HOW exactly? On the other hand, if I have Debian on my home PC and on my server, they are the same system, so I’d be learning the same system at two places and with two usage scenarios. But it might be easier to make mistakes on Debian..? What is your opinion/recommendation? EDIT: thank you everyone! My gut feeling was Debian and your responses were overwhelmingly in favor of Debian, so Debian it is :)
