This is a thing they promise every time new consoles come out and then it never makes it to release. Or maybe it did and no developer ever used the feature.

Oh awesome. They don’t have steering or pedals so when the cloud service fails in 5 years, the entire car will be complete e-waste.

All it takes is a software update for these to be bricks. If (and when) Tesla goes under, I doubt they will allow driverless cars that are no longer owned by a company. They will inevitably lock their firmware down as much as possible. It will, for all intents and purposes, just stop working the day the company stops existing. Or the new model will come out and they’ll just stop supporting them. Or any number of other cynical tactics that Tesla and companies like it have shown time and again that they are totally open to doing. How are these going to be any different than the e-waste scooters and bikes that have to be Frankensteined (Berm Peak YT link) to barely get working? And these can’t even be used as traditional cars as a fallback. They are made only to be driven by wire. Now any minor stoppage is a journey ender. Need to go around an accident and an officer is directing but your car is confused? Can’t. Need to interrupt it as it starts approaching an animal or child it doesn’t see? Can’t. Need to pursue in rough weather because someone is injured in the passenger seat? Can’t. Sure, you might say, “But you wouldn’t hire one of these vehicles in those scenarios.” But now that vehicle is destined for a short life as an upscale taxi that will never be used for anything practical. No second chance to do literally anything practical or useful. These are all things every single car up to this point has been expected to be able to do. It’s a machine at the end of the day. The new standard is to start taking those things away and finding a ways to make us pay a premium to get them back. Trust me when I say the end goal in these people’s minds is that we all sit in cars that we pay for but never get to drive. So yes, I am cynical because every one of these companies has given me nothing but reason to be cynical.

Imagine being one of the developers who put their time and effort into the base OS tools back in the day (almost all of which we had as far back as 7) only to watch Windows 11 undo all of it.

Part of it could either be that they’re not spending the time for a home release audio mix, don’t want to for purity’s sake or I’ve seen issues with trying to condense surround soundscapes down to stereo. It all comes down to dynamic range and they _should_ be using all of it for theatrical release and then remastering for home release. TV shows do not get a pass. Cinephile audio engineers that think the vast majority of their listeners will have home theater setups are just plain delusional.

I remember when the first round of capacitive buttons showed up. I can’t find it anymore, but there was an article on a fan site for MP3 players I read in 2010 that showed the comparisons of physical vs capacitive vs touchscreens and capacitive buttons _only_ had negatives. It baffled me when they just never stopped using them on things. That article was burned into my mind and now I see that logic has spilled into a thousand other industries.

It does suck at first. I’m out of habit at the moment, but when you actually just wake up at that time instead of the dreaded snooze loop, you come into the day more awake and alert than anyone else, on top of the fact that you’ve probably taken some time to watch, read, or listen to something to relax ahead of time. It can genuinely be the difference between a good day and a bad one.

Fun story about these. When I was a kid and first came across these, my classmates had convinced me that lemon was the weakest flavor. This meant that when I had one, it was way too strong, and I assumed all the others must be worse, so it was the flavor I always picked when offered. Moral of the story: don’t always take others word for it and be willing to try options that you’ve been told are wrong.

Except that it sounds like this hooked into an app and sent all the info about those Bluetooth devices to the manufacturer, which some data collectors can use process of elimination to isolate you. Normal (privacy-respecting) Bluetooth devices do not pass this info to the service provider and only your phone uses it to pair with the device.

I’ve watched a few videos on the game and with this claim, I think they would have needed the ten years that NMS had, but there just isn’t as much of a unique idea underneath. Unless I was missing something Anthem was just a really pretty looter shooter with a cool suit. It’s a pretty game, I’ll give it that, but they would have had to strip and rebuild the gameplay loop pretty much from scratch to make it that much of a success story.

The most obvious one to me is the missing notch in the RAM slot. And this is more vague, but AI struggles with complex perspective in images like this and the whole proportions are just a bit ‘wavy’? ‘Wonky’? Not sure what it is, but things just don’t quite line up sharply like they do on a real motherboard.

Oddly, I had a similar experience with the game. It just sort of ended up in the collection of “backed up” games in my library. Can’t remember who recommended it. Maybe it’s cursed? If it is a cursed game, they at least made it fun. It’s a pretty fast-paced shooter with lots of unique enemies and pretty backdrops. Edit: I misread this and thought you were talking about the original series that ended around 2012. I looked at the new one and it looks like it lost a lot of what made the original good. I recommend checking out the older ones.

This is precisely what happened at both of my call center jobs. Started out great, with new employees getting a month of training before talking with a customer, but rapidly accepting as many customers as are willing to call in. Then when they started to fall behind on support from the extra workload, they just outsourced it to a third party and didn’t teach them jack. KPI Number go up, but every customer I talked to recognized the significant drop in quality.

You are correct that this is normal _for the OS_. The OS will use this data to determine your location. What is not normal is abusing the Bluetooth permission to send a list of scanned devices to _app vendor_. They should only be collecting the location, not the raw Bluetooth list. I don’t know what the app is to confirm, but the way they said it, they would be handing all of the _local device data_ along with the standard location permission. This is the extra data that can be used to isolate you more than just a location could. This is similar to browser fingerprinting, but worse because your phone goes with you everywhere. One final mention is that the app is likely not collecting that list once, but rather regularly, so they could build a profile on what devices you’re in range of and by extension where you are regularly, even if you chose to disable your location, since they’re using Bluetooth MAC addresses as their workaround.

This is saying that their _online_ MS account has somehow lost the database entry for Snipping Tool (something that should just be integrated into the base OS) being associated with their account, meaning that even though it appears installed and I’m pretty sure based on what I’m seeing the binaries are ready and waiting. The online store prevents it from launching. Definitely exclusive to MicroSlop.

Looking into it, there’s a range of standards for Blu-Ray in terms of video quality. I doubt there are a ton of discs that can’t afford a few of those 25-50GB. Just spitballing ways to make it approachable rather than say only one way is correct. There’s all sorts of fancy stuff going on with DTS. Maybe they could work compression into part of the standard and just include alternate mixes.

The timing of the AI boom was really unfortunate. There were several tools coming off the ground that were all app builders for databases. I could tell they were about to start heading in a node-based or at least script-based design, but the moment AI came out, pretty much every single one was like, “we don’t know how our tool works anymore, but our AI can vomit some shit up in no time!” I just want an app builder that doesn’t require a web dev masters to work with.

I have been having excellent luck with MkDocs Material. It’s very lightweight and static and has a ton of extensibility. Their documentation itself is written using their own software and gives you a great idea of what it has to offer: squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/ I use it both at work and for a game squadron wiki. It’s entirely written in Markdown so syntax is pretty quick to learn as well. Not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s become my new go to for documentation.

I have found exactly one use case so far that an LLM and almost no other tool is suited for. I was given a list of some 20000 businesses info for marketing and they all have categories. There were a total of 400 categories. Each one needed what amounted to a “vibe score” based on how relevant it was to our business. Sure, it might have a few wrong, but for the occasional wrong one, worst case is a bad contact. Dramatically faster than doing it by hand and likely better at generating the scores with less bias than a human. I hated the entire process and the fact that the results were a resounding success.

I wouldn’t have so much of a problem with all of this if: A: It was information provided clearly to the user, including after install and B: There was a publicly and clearly standardized process for how the user should be expected to interact with those files. Sometimes games will hide screenshots and export data there where others will lose their shit if everything isn’t very carefully handled. Mod folders, user music, save files, screenshots, controller configs… These are things that are now in tens of thousands of games and everyone can just sort of choose whatever they’re in the mood for and no one bats an eye. It would just be nice if you did t have to go investigating on PCGamingWiki just to check for basic info.

I’ve been going caseless for years now. I just keep it in my pocket or on the charger 99% of the time. It has some minor microscratches from about two years of use, but I also don’t drop my phone and know not to drag it on its screen. I’ve had one of my dozen or so phones get a hairline crack, and I still used it for another year before replacing it due to performance. I honestly don’t know what everyone is doing to their phones, but I’ve been careful/lucky enough to not have to deal with the extra bulk. I personally can’t stand the way a case feels.

Now this might have something to do with what they mean when they disable safeguards. Maybe there’s a layer of user-defined limits that are carefully defined, but when safeguards are disabled, it just runs as a raw universe simulation, matter, photons and all.
