Quick #FreeBSD tip 😈

Want to test how your filesystem behaves with a slow disk?
GNOP can simulate slow or failing storage without needing broken hardware.

Still hungry for more? Check out: https://oshogbo.com/blog/71/

GEOM NOP

GEOM NOP

Sometimes while testing file systems or applications you want to simulate some errors on the disk level. The first time I heard about this need was from Baptiste Daroussin during his presentation at AsiaBSDCon 2016. He mentioned how they had built a test lab with it. The same need was recently discussed during the PGCon 2019, to test a PostgreSQL instance. If you are FreeBSD user, I have great news for you: there is a GEOM provider which allows you to simulate a failing device.

Quick #OpenZFS tip 😈

You can scrub only data written during a specific time window.

More details: https://oshogbo.com/blog/86/

Teaching ZFS about time

Teaching ZFS about time

ZFS is a robust file system, in large part thanks to its copy-on-write design. Problems can still show up: flaky cables, dying drives, or the occasional cosmic ray flipping a bit. For exactly those situations ZFS has a feature called scrub. Scrub walks every used block starting from the uberblock and compares the stored checksum against the data on disk.

Seems like something I could use from time to time: https://scissor.studio/

Seems like #FreeBSD is getting the @brave@mastodon.social browser, with support for ad blocking, Widevine DRM (still requires the Linuxulator), and MPRIS media controls.

I chased a memory leak in bsnmpd with #DTrace on #FreeBSD. Care to join? https://oshogbo.com/blog/92/

Hunting Memory Leaks in bsnmpd with DTrace

One of my FreeBSD boxes runs `bsnmpd`, the base system SNMP daemon. The machine is on 15.0-p2, and the daemon kept growing until the kernel ran out of patience and OOM-killed it. That is not a good feature for a daemon. I could have just added a cron job to restart it and called it a day. But a leak that kills a long-running daemon is exactly the kind of thing I like to chase, and I already had a tool for it.

Today I discovered https://script.google.com.

I always assumed that if you wanted to use Google APIs, like Google Calendar, you had to set up a #GCP project, configure APIs, credentials, and then deploy something like a Cloud Function to run your code periodically. A headache - even when I think about it.

Quick #OpenZFS tip 😈

Wondering where your ZFS space actually went? Check it with `zfs list` command.

Still confused? Check out: https://oshogbo.com/blog/65/

Confusion with used/free disk space in ZFS
oshogbo//vx

Confusion with used/free disk space in ZFS

I use ZFS extensively. ZFS is my favorite file system. I write articles and give lectures about it. I work with it every day. In traditional file systems we use df(1) to determine free space on partitions. We can also use du(1) to count the size of the files in the directory. But it’s different on ZFS and this is the most confusing thing EVER. I always forget which tool reports what disk space usage! Every time somebody asks me, I need to google it. For this reason I decided to document it here

I'm blown away by the pace of #AI research.

One week we're excited about Jev. A few days later, we already have open alternatives and recipes for training our own Jev-like models.

Quick #OpenZFS tip 💾

You can scrub only the data written since the last scrub.

More details:
https://oshogbo.com/blog/89/

Don't Make ZFS Re-Read What It Just Read
oshogbo//vx

Don't Make ZFS Re-Read What It Just Read

I have already mentioned one of my improvements to scrub in an earlier post, Teaching ZFS about time. In that post I also claimed that scrub can be expensive, and that we were looking for ways to limit the amount of data we actually want to scrub. A scrub on a multi-petabyte pool can run for days, and some of us want a smaller, easier check that everything is still going right.

Suricata, Jumbo Frames, and Netmap - let's see what can go wrong this time.

https://oshogbo.com/blog/93/

Suricata, Jumbo Frames, and netmap
oshogbo//vx

Suricata, Jumbo Frames, and netmap

One of my FreeBSD machines sits between the Internet and the rest of my network. I wanted Suricata to monitor traffic arriving on four of the machine's interfaces and complain when something looks wrong. I started with one interface, `mce1`, and planned to add the other three after capture worked. The capture interfaces are backed by Mellanox ConnectX adapters handled by the mlx5en driver, and they use a jumbo-frame MTU of 9000 bytes.
