It is plunder. The training data is gathered by copying any available human-produced media but without author consent. It is also horror in that with nearly all the tech companies making the pivot to AI and the costs of parts are high, suddenly it becomes very expensive now to own a computer or even a smartphone, and then the major proprietary operating systems have some form of so-called AI assistance. Worse, even governments are now going full-hog on AI believing this is the way to go, and encouraging people to embrace it because “it’s almost like magic”. Nothing else makes my head scream seeing the invasion of AI slop at practically everywhere I go. Especially that 300-like artwork.

They are happy, OTOH. Happy in seeing how much further the West despairs and sinks in the quagmire of misery. You’re just giving them excuses to laugh at your despair. A person who was demoralized is unable to assess true information, the facts tell nothing to him. Even if I shower him with information…he will refuse to believe it…that’s the tragedy of the situation of demoralization.

Another reason why they stayed there for years is not only it's one of many channels for which to impart their news about their activities or telling users they have individual right to privacy, with fucking Musk now in charge, their presence sought to challenge that bastard's grip upon social media. Likewise, neither the UN nor Al-Jazeera are yet leaving the platform for the sake of informing the world and the oppressed in general, despite these organizations being opposed to right-wing warmongering, lying, and mafia capitalism, and Musk and those goddamned bots in response trying to harass or reduce their presence.

Trying to be unique in a largely crowded endeavor like Japanese manga is a very difficult game. Like choosing names for one's creations. So some authors have to resort to using bewildering longer titles if only to stand out, and it gets weirder in very prolific manga subgenres such as a harem romcom. I faintly remember about Japanese creatives trying to find naming inspirations from practically *anywhere* -- a favorite movie, actor, athlete, an odd quote, a phrase in French or Italian (there is heavy use of "atelier"), etc. -- for which to name their next work, not just manga but Japanese product names and trademarks in general; there is a girl's fashion brand over there which had taken a "Cecil McBee" as its trademark without the knowledge of the actual musician bearing that name (he was informed of it, got surprised, then tried unsuccessfully to sue in court).

It is more like taking someone's style *without consent at all*, and for profit. Few societies and institutions teach about art appreciation to everyone, and the understanding of one's expression through art is also emotional investment, that's why creatives in traditional manual endeavors are understandably enraged at AI and its investors being tactless in taking their style and then mass-producing the generated media for aesthetic but soulless consumption.

Social rejection and perceived refusal by the opposite sex would do just make those individuals – mostly young men – drift into developing a relationship with chatbots whose responses are entirely positive, even to the point of agreeing with anything that person says. It doesn’t help that a sheltered lifestyle instead of daily social interaction would make things worse. Also, I’m of the opinion that it was only after the late 90s we started to see Japanese-style introverted subcultures and lifestyles being introduced and appropriated elsewhere as soon as these were disseminated through online fora, and those individuals appropriating them thought they relate to those subcultures.

Accept ‘bad things’ in return for benefits of AI, says Sam Altman cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/52752723 Boss of OpenAI calls for a regulatory light touch because of the ‘good stuff’ the technology can deliver The chief executive of OpenAI cited hacks, scams and “other bad things that will happen” in an interview that sparked an instant backlash from critics of the big AI companies. His comments came after one of his company’s safety experts resigned, saying at the weekend that its “culture is broken”. In an interview released on Monday, Altman was asked about how OpenAI’s approach to safety differed from that of Anthropic, which has called for the industry to slow down after one of its researchers quit, warning that AI experts believed “it could kill us all by the end of the decade”. “I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman said. “One of the differences between us and some of the stricter AI safety people is that we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely].

Utah will become first state to let AI examine patients and prescribe medication without direct human oversight cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/52799193 Being a doctor is one of the jobs expected to be least at risk from AI replacement. But a new program launched in Utah is raising questions over that assumption. A healthcare startup will begin offering AI examinations and prescriptions to patients without direct human oversight, making Utah the first state to replace a doctor with an AI. The good news is that the program is currently very limited in its scope. It’s just one year long and only for patients with mild-to-moderate acne. The process works when a person signs up for Nolla Health’s $4.99-per-month app and uses it to scan their face. After completing a medical history and personal information form, the AI analyzes their skin, identifies the acne problem, rates the skin’s oiliness, and then generates a numerical acne severity score that ranges between clear skin and severe acne, reports Bloomberg.

Some devs in the big corpos got spoiled with so much memory, with feature creep they managed to bloat up once reliable programs. In 1994 and when I began compsci, I remember how memory and bandwidth conservation was then taken so seriously, where performance was a high consideration over eyecandy. That I once got hold of Creating Killer Websites (yeah, that book), which included a section on how to slim down images to make them download faster, as at the time nearly everyone were on dialup. Videogames were then equally small, they were mostly sprite-based and were easily fit into a CDROM, as other games had basic vector graphics and low-resolution texturing.
