hi i like doing stuff with music and computers
interests:
- programming (c89, typescript)
- tinkering with my linux desktop
- music theory (math-driven, not convention-driven)
- software modular synthesis (using pd)
- dj-ing (especially with 90s techno and adjacent genres)
- home taping (i kill music)
usage:
- please be direct with me (direct does not mean rude)
- avoid using ambiguous social cues, im likely to misinterpret them
quirks:
- i dont use the followers-only scope, what you see is what youll get
- follow requests are very much based on vibes but it helps if weve had friendly conversations before
- if you respond to one of my posts with a follower-only post ill restrict the scope to dm, because when someones follower-only thread federates to me i can only see half of the messages in it, which i find very irritating and dont want to inflict upon others

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com @solonovamax@tech.lgbt you could also install a graylog (log aggregator)

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com it always fetches favorites from your followed accounts, and if the favorited post was a reply, it will also recursively fetch the reply chain until it reaches the origin post, it doesnt fetch the entire thread tho

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com note that fba is incomplete, most notably it doesnt look at pleromas new native defederation feature, only simplepolicy

@6@possum.city @luna@fedi.mldchan.dev yeah but as i already said the reason i rewrote this to js was because shell scripts just become painful to maintain once they reach a certain complexity, especially with the complete lack of error handling that just results in weird behavior when you write a bug, rather than your program crashing
i rewrote it to js when i added the function to pick certs automatically

@jcm @mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com well its your project and your decision but i wont federate with passive scrapers

@hsza@social.tudbut.de @luna@fedi.mldchan.dev agree, but sometimes i cant avoid it
also you should still do some kind of physical activity every now and then to keep your body in a healthy state (i like to go hiking although ive kinda neglected that the past year)
i wrote a script that lets you find instances with malicious mrfs (ignoring deletes)
@devious@fedi.tengu.space you may find this useful
hmpf, so what if i did meow on your timeline, what would you do about it huh???

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com i selfhosted gitlab in the past and it was a horrendous experience
i really liked the ability to nest folders (that was the main reason why i picked gitlab), but it has massive memory leaks that it 'fixes' by running a watchdog process that just periodically restarts some service...
also literally every single update broke my entire instance, which went as far as me having to reinstall everything twice
eventually i gave up on it, havent had a selfhosted git anymore ever since
if i ever run a public git again id prolly just use gitweb or something similar

@luna@fedi.mldchan.dev @noisytoot@berkeley.edu.pl @gabboman pinned posts are also fetched automatically
also there are some AP implementations (snac) that push posts onto your timeline even if noone on your instance is following anyone on the snac instance

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com some instances defederate others for not having defederated the same instances as them

@hsza@social.tudbut.de @luna@fedi.mldchan.dev i just have one domain with a very non-personal name (x7q.eu) and put all names i use on subdomains; this has the advantages that a) its cheaper than using multiple domains, b) can also be used by people other than me and c) is very trivial to replace if needed because there isnt really any identity tied to it

@6@possum.city @luna@fedi.mldchan.dev i know i know, i kept it the way it was originally organized in the shell script because i wanted to keep the indentation consistent
also i might get rid of the console.log completely in the future and just write to the config directly

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com oh idk if they made it managable in docker, back when i ran gitlab i was running it directly on the host, through the arch package

@jcm @mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com if an object didnt have an id there would be no way to refer to it

@mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com @hsza@social.tudbut.de @sel@fedi.wasp.best i wouldnt recommend using defederation as a means for moderation since all it does is make you stop responding to requests from the foreign instance, i find it more effective to just locally disable the accounts of people you dont want to see on your timeline (yes this does work with accounts on other instances)
its much more tedious to do but i blocked about 200 accounts this way and my timeline is pretty chill

@sel@fedi.wasp.best ohh
no clue tbh, maybe wasp.nest if you wanna be funny
im really bad at inventing names, i just set my instance name to the domain name

@jcm @mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com its passive because all instances of users you follow will deliver posts to you and its a scraper because its accumulating remote users posts and doesnt delete them when a delete request is received
deleting posts manually implies that a) youll look at them even if its briefly and b) you actually have the capacity to go through all of them
Replying to
@hsza@social.tudbut.de @sel@fedi.wasp.best @mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com the way i understood, you already did defederate them
and im saying that this alone will only work if everyone else you federate with also defederates them because otherwise messages from those instances can still get to you if someone from an instance you do federate with interacts with them
basically
- you send a message
- nazi responds <- this doesnt get to you due to defederation
- someone responds to the nazi for whatever reason <- the response is federated to you
- your instance backfills the reply chain and with that fetches the message from the nazi
some chud instance appears to be blocking me, crazy considering i dont even remember having interacted with any of their users
but anyway, they have mrf transparency disabled so might as well make it a mutual block

@jcm @mldkyt@soc.mldkyt.com sorry but if it can store posts it should be able to delete posts too and if that uses too much resources then youre doing something wrong, either by having chosen the wrong storage method or having implemented it poorly
if its meant as an experiment sure go ahead but i wouldnt federate with it
