I’m absolutely blown away by the response to CFP this year! Utterly phenomenal. You’re going to make program selection so difficult. Thank you everyone! 💜

How does the program get selected (and why does it take so long)? Keep an eye out for a news post about the process soon! #pyconau #cfp

I jumped on the microphone with @richlitt@mastodon.social to discuss the sustainability of regional conferences like @pyconau@mastodon.pycon.org.au and how important it is to have a thriving local community!

If you're anything like me, you've left submitting to #PyConAU CFP until the very last minute. Well those last few minutes are TODAY, as the CFP closes in just a few hours time.

@glasnt @benno Yeah this is definitely a "set everyone up for success" than "responding to an incident". We appreciate the care though @abstractcode, we're actually (and thankfully) having an awesome time this year! <3 To frame it another way, we're standing on the shoulders of giants, who've dealt with 'things' before us. The intent of this post is to encourage and help guide everyone to make an awesome, humorous and engaging proposal for CFP (and alter on, talks). Especially as we're explicitly seeking new audiences and new ideas. By positioning things positively and proactively while CFP is open we aim to set the tone of things somewhat transparently, and without having to say all the negative things on a defensive back foot after the fact.

RE: https://federate.social/@jik/116375470696418852

Irrespective of law enforcement this is just good opsec. I don’t want message bodies in notifications!

federate.social

Jonathan Kamens 86 47 (@jik@federate.social)

If you think there's any chance that law enforcement might ever be interested in the content of your Signal chats, and you don't want them to have access to them, then setting up disappearing messages is necessary but not sufficient. You also need to go into the Signal settings and either disable notifications completely or set them to show "No name or message" so the content won't be capture and preserved in the phone's notification database. #infosec #privacy #OpSec "#antifa"

RE: https://mastodon.pycon.org.au/@pyconau/116321137591546438

In my latest blog post from #pyconau I go behind the scenes to share how we form a conference schedule from all the talks that have been submitted.

The program review committee really has their work cut out for them this year (thank you!) - we exceeded every single target I could have imagined! 🚀

So. This is how we select the talks that get accepted to the conference! 👀 📖 👇🏼

PyCon AU Mastodon

PyCon AU (@pyconau@mastodon.pycon.org.au)

We had a phenomenal response to CFP this year. Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal to be a part of the conference in August. It takes a lot of time and effort to get through all your awesome session submissions. So while we take the time to review each and everyone of them, this post goes behind the scenes to explain how the program review committee works to select talks for #PyConAU 2026. https://2026.pycon.org.au/posts/what-happens-after-cfp/

RE: https://mastodon.pycon.org.au/@pyconau/116315534911806259

I always leave these things to the last minute... and I can see by our submission rates that you do too! 📈

This is your last opportunity to share your talk, workshop and posters ideas with @pyconau@mastodon.pycon.org.au - and we would genuinely love all your weird, whacky, fun and informative ideas to be considered!

Embrace the fun and whimsy and submit ideas that are 'quite different' even if you're not sure!

Talks do not have to have python code on the slides, they just have to share lessons and stories that are relevant to people who use Python. (That last bit is important).

And lastly, emphasising that our financial assistance program is also open to applicants in Australia and nearby Oceania countries that do not have a national Python event this year.

https://2026.pycon.org.au/attend/financial-assistance

Apply ASAP (next few days is ok) if you would like your grant application to be considered alongside the CFP.
