@vowe That’s also true of being Canadian, except instead of 17:00, it’s all day long.
Fortunately, as long as I don’t get curious and take a peek at the news…

@nahuellofeudo@mastodon.social @joachim@boitam.eu The difference, though, is that AI is far more than just chatbots and porn. There’s a lot of hype (i.e. Silicon Valley propaganda, as I like to call it), but it *is* a genuine field of study that has more applications than in selling you innovation theatre.

🟣[unknown] - using print statements to debug a small program because I’m too lazy to bother setting up the debugger.
I’ll still use the debugger for larger projects, although one of my pet peeves is getting the debugger to work for the first time on a project.
(My other pet peeve is getting stuff to compile, especially in C or C++)

@mcc@mastodon.social It’s arguably the only such space left in our late capitalist society. We must protect them at all costs!
(Or, no cost.)

@gruber@mastodon.social No, not really. Aside from the presidency beginning on a failed “coup”, there was the pullout of Afghanistan, normalisation of mass shootings, the increasingly rogue Supreme Court making wildly incorrect decisions like banning abortion, overturning decades of precedent, and declaring the President above the law, and, of course, the Gaza Genocide.

@dfs_comedy@mastodon.social @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social Also, the whole world—and all celestial bodies by the way—is just Greater China. The office of the Celestial Emperor is currently unoccupied, has been since 1911, and will remain as such for as long as China is committed to keeping the imperial monarchy abolished, but such has been the way of things for thousands of years. So I see no reason to change it.

@gabe_sky@infosec.exchange There’s also the #FOSS barcode generator #Zint, which I’ve used since antiquity (roughly 2012) to make QR codes of various kinds for me.

@MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social Doubly ironic, given that the US and Britain helped to overthrow Iran’s democratically-elected government in 1953, which eventually led to the Iranian Revolution in 1979 that turned Iran into the Islamic theocracy it is today.

@0x575446@mastodon.social @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social Lol, nope, Lake Ontario is now Lake Toronto. Because we’re the largest city on the lake. Ain’t that how it works?
Also, we can keep Lake Michigan so long as we all agree to pronounce it “Lake Mitch-igan”.

@weirdadmiral@rollenspiel.social @Morgunin@rollenspiel.social Totally unrelated; even though I have a rather limited understanding of German, I understood it as “if only it were so”, but still read it in my English brain as “when is that so rare”.
I wonder if it’s possible to write a whole book using these sorts of linguistic double translations.

@DerPumu@mstdn.games @fribbledom@mastodon.social Finally getting round to learning Python hit the unexpected learning curve of it being dynamically-typed…and I’ve only ever used statically-typed languages. I guess VB6 is technically dynamically-typed, but I’ve always just put ‘Option Explicit’ at the top of every program and just not thought about it.
Type hints are just that: hints. Turns out they only tell me (and the IDE) what type a variable’s supposed to be and doesn’t affect runtime.

@su_liam@mas.to @T2R@infosec.exchange @xyla@shitpost.trade @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Not really. That’s more of structural problem/feature of our economy. Also, the current problem I have with LLMs is that they’re massively inefficient regardless of what you use it for. There’s no way to integrate a dialogue-generating LLM into a video game without making it unnecessarily large, and it will still hallucinate no matter how you program it.

@jargoggles@kolektiva.social @lisamelton@mastodon.social Meanwhile, I operate under the assumption that most people would (probably) agree with my unquestionably radical progressivism if they really thought about it, but most people don’t seem to want to think really hard about anything, either because thinking requires effort and a total re-examination of your pre-existing beliefs, or out of fear for the unthinkable conclusions they might reach.

@D_J_Nathanson@mastodon.social Interesting. I’ve always just “accepted” the simple fact that, if I were properly arrested (and not just handcuffed, which I have), there’d be nothing I can or not do that won’t end very poorly. In my experience, Miranda rights largely boil down to “you have the right to remain silent, but your refusal to speak may be construed as a sign of guilt”.

@eff@mastodon.social @aaronmackey@sfba.social @theintercept@journa.host It has never fooled me, not once nor even a little bit, that conservatives who want to ban porn have no interest whatsoever in “protecting children”. They’ll keep saying that, though, because children are just the only demographic over which it is still acceptable to exert unlimited political power.
Replying to
@kumarvibe@mastodon.social Not bad, but will it also prevent companies from hiring new execs who pledge to pollute “less”, with “less” being marginally lower than the last guy such that nothing has to change?

@_elena How can there be “no engagement” on the Fediverse? I posted about this recently, but I’ve been here on Mastodon for only about a year and I already have about as many followers as I spent six years on Twitter getting. Yet, it feels like I have ten times as many due to the amount of engagement I get.
This place feels alive, unlike e𝕏-Twitter, which was already dead before arrival into Elon Musk’s hands.

@sarajw@front-end.social That’s the social networking experience I remember from way back during what I call the ‘Golden Age of Social Networking’. The four short years of 2009 to 2013, from the latter years of elementary school to the first half of high school, were the years in which the utility of social networking sites were at their peak.
It’s all been downhill from there.

@MEActNOW@mastodon.social The “free” market used to sell things like cocaine toothache remedies and radioactive water to people, which predictably resulted in a lot of gruesome and entirely preventable deaths. The free market is a terrible idea with regard to both efficient distribution and the survival of humanity.

I mean, why is this a technically possible result? The silver lining is that #TwoSeventy is a remarkably accurate simulation in that everything in a presidential campaign—speeches, rallies, debates, competence, etc.—has been reduced to…money. Just money. It’s so on the nose that I bet the vast majority of people completely miss it.

@dreamwinder@mstdn.social @enoch_exe_inc@mastodon.social @jensorensen@mastodon.social It isn’t quite that simple. Remember Microsoft Tay back in 2017? It was released to the public for about a day because Microsoft’s researchers made the mistake of allowing it to learn from anyone on the Internet who talk to it, and in a few hours learned every racial slur and defence of Hitler there was.
What the—did #VSCode just change the default theme?
Replying to
@dreamwinder@mstdn.social @enoch_exe_inc@mastodon.social @jensorensen@mastodon.social It took a fairly huge effort on OpenAI’s part to make ChatGPT as inoffensive as possible—*mainly* so that it doesn’t attract (as much) negative attention. LLMs with fewer (or without) such restrictions will spew as much nonsense as any human.
Replying to
@dreamwinder@mstdn.social @enoch_exe_inc@mastodon.social @jensorensen@mastodon.social It’s not necessarily a bad thing. I got into #AIDungeon originally because it would take any idea I gave it, no matter how preposterous, narratively absurd, or socially unacceptable, and run with it. That’s kind of the point of a CYOA game powered by AI.
So, naturally, when OpenAI got wind of what people were doing with their precious GPT-3, they shut it down immediately.
RIP, old AI Dungeon. You were fun to play with during quarantine.
#Discord uses #ElectronJS. That explains *so* much, like why it eats up like 300 MB just idling in the background. Remember when MSN Messenger used just 6 MB of memory *and* it could handle voice and video chat? Such is the modern era of unmitigated #codebloat.
