Most accurate description of Element I’ve ever heard to be honest. It’s literally just Discord, with all of it’s bloat, but with a protocol that wants to have “security” bolted on. And all of the security related dialogs have race conditions in them. Actually, not just in Element, all clients, even nheko and fluffychat, has race conditions in the fucking security dialogs. All of my devices are just unverified now, I just gave up.

element is much lighter weight Here, the webapps are measured via the very scientific method of Firefox about:processes, doesn’t even account Firefox itself which is like 760 megs (decimal MB or MiB? I am not sure) if I were to believe it. On amd64, loonix with glibc and all that crap (assuming I am reading “shared” correctly in htop which I assume to be libraries like glibc and glib): Discord: starts at 800 megs, garbage collects down to 704 to 710-ish (overburned CD size?); turning on/off equicord doesn’t affect it much Element: 367 mystery units after clicking around for a while, 341 unfocused random forum with a bunch of emotes and table decorations (for comparison sake): 69 meters (NICE) qwebirc (1 server): 61 megs Nheko: 362 MiB, 201MiB shared (probably with Firefox, can’t close cuz I am typing here rn) Dino: 334MiB, 116 shared (probably with Firefox) Mumble (random server with a long text greeting and nobody in voice): 169MiB, 130MiB shared. Weechat (6 servers): 65392 bytes, out of which 33396 shared (with system daemons I am guessing). Toxic: 44648 bytes, out of which 0 are shared. Plus ~90000 for Alacritty (65160 shared when multiple). lmao

astrachat.com paid XMPP. It claims the US army, apart from a few other government entities around the world, uses it. I find this funny because this implies someone integrated Grok into XMPP.

{verification} Ah, verification and trust are separate. Cool. Well, it was like 2 years ago? I had a different Element session than now (new one now for testing), nheko and fluffychat, and I pressed every possible button and nothing happened. When I open nheko, a dialog box says “Activate encryption”; “to make this device trusted {blah blah blah}” with a big “Verify” button. Pressing it does the same as closing the dialog, so a whole lot of nothing. Same right now. I did try logging out and back in on different devices, back then only though. in tox, it seems encryption is mandatory Because that’s how it’s routed, yes. Peer to peer with fewer points of centralization (still there for node discovery and TCP<>UDP tunnels and shit). The message encryption and the transport encryption are the same. github.com/TokTok/c-toxcore/issues/426 Let’s say that Mallory, M, has stolen A’s private key I stopped reading there. I mean, good thing to know that it’s possible (especially for potential punks using it and whatnot), but I feel like opsec is fucked regardless in this case.

As someone else pointed out, “Cloud” is a buzz word that also means rented compute. Pull the plug, cars die. IDK how exactly. They could get confused and attempt to ALL drive back to their parking lots I guess. Although it sounds like they will be wasted to me, still.

Fun fact, most Tetris clones have a 4D table of all pieces and their rotations. Or multiple user selectable. The actual game generates them (look up “tetris recomp site:github.com”).

I had alpha updates on and got this early. I then mistook this for malware. Because it fucking sucks. This is the only time I had to wait for fucking F-Droid to load. All because they are still sucking Google’s dick and abiding by their orders of “meh use this 320GiB framew*rk so that this button can be this much rounded”. They have been bitten quite a few times and they still haven’t learned anything. AND the alpha didn’t have offline sharing. I figured they would add it later. They did not. It’s gone. In some places, one rarely ever goes online. The app auto-updates once and the feature is gone. Reduced to atoms. Cannot share anything. Also, they used corpo speak to justify it. I repeat, this so called “collection of nerds” used corporate speak to justify something. EDIT: I guess they added it, but the corpo speak was so bad that the blog post makes it read like it was not added. My conclusion is fuck Android, fuck smartphones, that platform is dead, go back to Thinkpads. Older ones. And not E series. And not L series. These Thinkpads. Normalize sharing .c files via an Ethernet cable. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

There was “Arch Linux ARM” (“ALARM”) for a while but all updates that happen to it currently are automations. Stuff breaks more and more from time to time and the maintainer is unresponsive. I am assuming that’s why the Asahi project moved to Fedora. And a new proposition inside of Arch Linux allows a “port” to be made but nobody submitted anything. It needs 2 maintainers minimum. Anyways, so what I am assuming happened is that they just did their own port and never released the build scripts, because of course they would. From what I’ve heard, only a small “base” is actually running natively and FEX has it’s root set to a specific variant of the “Steam Linux Runtime” (you know, like when you install something on Steam it installs that?) fit to run Steam itself rather than games, could be wrong though.

You are forgetting that basically everything is de-facto capitalism. If you use this in Christiania, you step out to Denmark and suddenly you are no longer ethical because you are contributing to capitalism. Oh, and you are forgetting 6: can only be trained by data harvesting corporations. Open weight != open source.

that doesn’t mean ‘everything’ I said basically. Neither does it mean that the majority mode of production of the world will be capitalism tomorrow. Wanna bet? I close my eyes, sleep, wake up sometime (hopefully) then check. Christiania Intentional anarcho-communistic commune somewhere in the middle of Denmark. Denmark is fine with it because it’s making tourist money. It’s like a cool fact, like “did you know there’s a place where people avoid using money”. Obviously, they go out sometimes. Apart from that, stuff done there that is only “ethical outside of capitalism” isn’t ethical for the outside world. If someone does vibecoding there and considers it ethical for some reason but not outside (like the de facto lack of enforcement for intellectual property because it’s no longer needed), people outside still can’t use the work ethically. From what I’ve heard, they aren’t even really good with computers there, and I am not aware of any attempts to make their own. can only be trained by data harvesting corporations What is the problem here? The data-harvesting part or the corporations part? Both? Some people don’t want data harvesting yet it’s done. The CEO gets capital, so do investment companies and maybe some client companies.
