As I am on dialysis, I have a nutritionalist on my “care team”. I have tried repeatedly to explain to them that I fucking KNOW what I need to do, it is the DOING that is the issue. Yes, I have tried alarms. Yes, I have tried post-it notes. Yes, if you can think of it I probably have tried it.

We only have one non-fascist party at the moment, so yeah. But you say that like anyone who prefers one party over another wants a one-party state like they don’t prefer one party over the other. Find me non-fascist Republicans who are standing up for human rights and I’ll give them a shot, sure.

put safeguards in place to keep this from happening again. What safeguards will work against decades of oligarch-controlled media putting out fascist propaganda? What safeguards can Democrats put in with a mere majority when it takes a supermajority to make real changes? Most importantly, and I hate to say it: What would Democrats do even if they had a su permajority when establishment Democrats are content to suck at the teat of the oligarchs? While it’s worth the effort to elect Democrats, even establishment ones, because on economic issues they won’t help us much, on the issue of human rights in particular, there is a huge difference between the fascists and the establishment Democrats (and if that does’nt sound right, go read up on Christian nationalism and pay more fucking attention). But even the bluest of blue waves is not going to help much on most fronts. But it will help on some fronts.

Oh yes, you can see by the voting records and what each party does with legislation to see they are exactly the same and both treat environmental issues exactly the same. I mean, if you ignore the voting records and what each party does, that is.

I’m glad to see pushback on this article. I expected, frankly, knee-jerk reactions, but i’m pleased to see that people see through a lot of the bullshit. The aspect I wanted to discuss: We’re not losing our forests. At least not in the US. en.wikipedia.org/…/Forests_of_the_United_States We started out with a billion acres of forest in the US before Europeans came. We’ve lost about a quarter of that, but most of that was before a hundred years ago - for various reasons, it’s pretty stable, and we’re not only growing new wood for the most part instead of chopping down old growth, we’re gaining forest instead of losing it. I think we’re - overall - doing a not bad job on the forestry front. We need to keep moving away from petrochemicals (i.e. not just oil/gas/coal for power/transportation, but working towards finding replacements for all this damn plastic, too), and keep improving alternate energy sources. I have some hope on that front - for a tiny example, studies have looked at electric vehicles with higher miles, and the batteries are lasting much better than was feared (90% after 90k miles is not bad), and with new battery tech we should be able to better store wind/solar energy for use when it’s needed. There is some great news along those lines. We need to get rid of regresive politicians who are keeping polluting energy alive (along with shitting on human rights), and to do that we need to focus on getting rid of our oligarchs powering that system. But on the actual “nature” frnt, things are not bad in many ways (while not being great in others, sure).

Anytime a left-wing person talks about being disappointed with their lesser-of-two-evil options, people get all up in arms about the idea that we owe the Democratic Party our fealty. Nobody owes anyone anything, but when given the choice between a fascist who wouldn’t mind seeing me dead vs. an establishment Democrat who doesn’t mind if I manage to survive just as long as the oligarchs get their tax breaks, I’ll go with the one who doesn’t want to actively take away my human rights every time, if for no other reason that it’s the better choice at that point. So what the fuck are you doing BEFORE the general election? Or are you blowing the entire process off and then feeling smug about not voting for the lesser-of-two-evil THEREBY HELPING THE GREATER EVIL WIN.

Yeah, it’s a good thing both candidates were the same on every single issue, too, so there was literally no difference in picking between the fascist and the non-fascist. Fantastic job recognizing your duty to stick to one single issue where you feel they were the same!

Ah, thank you for that. I’m surprised I don’t see you posting in WAY more threads about people we should also avoid, then, as it seems like a relatively common offense. I’m not dismissing your concerns out of hand, mind. I’ve had to decide many times who I wish to throw out (JK Rowling) and who I really really don’t want to throw out but have at least minimized my support (Neil Gaiman). It’s a hard call, and standing up for what you feel strongly about - especially when it’s at least a pretty good cause - is something I can respect, even if my instinct on THIS one is to go “really? eh, who cares”. For me personally, it can take me some times to let ideas percolate in my head. My initial reaction is not to immediately unsub from Tasting History. But I’ll ponder on it, thanks to you. I guess I’m saying all this becasue I expected the reply to be something stupid I could just ignore and then berate you for spamming the thread. But I certainly can’t say that, whether or not I end up agreeing with you. So thank you for the answer. I do appreciate it. And I will honestly consider it.

The time to make that change is before the general election. Anytime you’re presented with two choices, take the less bad option. But if that’s the only time you bother to act, or even worse, if you don’t even act THEN to pick the lesser bad option, then you are one less vote against the worse, and therefore by your actions support it. But you already supported it if you weren’t fighting for better options. “Well, I didn’t pick which restaurant to visit very well, and this restaurant only has moldy fruit or sandwiches made literally from shit. I don’t like either option, so I’m just gonna eat whatever they bring me”. Sure, it’s not a great analogy in the sense that picking a different restaurant is not so easy in the context of politics, but I think it makes the point - always choose the lesser bad option. I’d rather eat the moldy fruit (we’re assuming that we must eat something in this metaphor) than the literal shit. And then work harder to try and prevent us from going to this restaurant next time. But if you are presented with the two bad options and one is worse, not picking an option is fucking stupid.

What I dislike is the lumping of all datacenters into one hated bucket. I suspect people don’t realize that, for example, the fediverse… exists in datacenters. Take away datacenters and the entire internet goes away. I think what people don’t want is a bunch of shitty datacenters (meaning using shitty power sources, for example) that are being built for AI or massive government/private data over-reach. You WANT some datacenters… This is like being against… prepared food. Sure, cooking from scratch is better, but outlaw all prepared foods and now you will be exhausted cooking every single day. We depend on some prepared foods. What we want is less added sugar, more healthy prepared foods, safer food, at a lower cost. We want improvements, not a complete ban. Same with datacenters.

No. First of all, the word “colored” has multiple meanings. “I colored in the draweing” is not offensive. “I gave the paper to the colored” is offensive because this is a different meaning. “Colored” used to be the preferred term for black people in the US - hence “NAACP” still contains “colored”. But walk up to a black person and call them “colored” and see how that goes for you. Just because a word is not offensive in one meaning or context doesn’t mean it’s not offensive in another. Second of all, some of your examples are not only a different meaning, but a different word. “Retard” as a noun is one thing, and is pronounced “REE-tard”. When an aircraft is landing, it is the verb, which is “re-TARD”. In general, in English, when a word serves as a noun or a verb, the strssed syllable changes. That can help you understand that it’s a different word, or meaning of a word. When you use “retard” to mean “someone stupid”, the meaning you are using IS THE SAME MEANING as “mental retardation”. That is where that comes from. So like it or not, you are using that epithet. In the same way that if you were to say you “jewed” someone out of some money, or “gyped” someone, those also are epithets, with thet former being antisemitic and the latter being… I don’t remember which word applies to being bigoted against Romani, commonly called gypsies. I’m afraid the ignorant mind - meaning that you didn’t know - is you. I hope this education helps. Your mind is clearly not stupid, don’t misread what I said. “Ignorance” is not a bad thing, it is a simple truth until you learn something. I’m ignorant of nuclear physics. But I’m not ignorant of where the word “retard” (in the epithet sense) comes from. And hopefully now you aren’t. So you have a choice: Continue to use a harmful word when there are so many other choices available that are not harmful, or shut your mind and continue to use a harmful word.

OTOH, one of the few coping techniques I’ve found to be helpful is when I absolutely MUST not lose something, especially to take with me somewhere on the next day, to loudly proclaim “I’m going to lose this thing, so I’m putting it here so I know where the fuck I lost it” - and making a big deal about it usually helps solve that problem. …if I do remember that I need it the next day, of course.

I’ve actually suffered off and on in my life because of my extensive and sometimes archaic vocabulary that came from reading so much as a child. I’m sure you meant nothing by your comment, but fuck off anyway, you’ve hit on a rather sensitive nerve. I fucking LOVE the crowd downvoting when a reference is missed. Fucking LOVE that shit because all it does is show how shitty these sites can be when they come together to bully someone. Voting doesn’t matter - except it’s the community feeling smug because they happen to know some thing that in this particular case, I happen not to. So fuck everyone.

I’ve seen those. I’m sure I’ve been called those, but my point is two-fold: Act BEFORE the general election to support better candidates But when the choice is between lesser-evil and greater-evil, NOT voting for lesser-evil IS VOTING FOR GREATER EVIL. That’s not opinion, it’s simple math. If the only thing someone does with politics is refrain from voting in the general election, they absolutely are supporting fascism. If the only thing someone does is vote in the general election, they are not supporting progressive candidates if their only option is between a fascist and an establishment Democrat. You must act BEFORE the primary to support who you want to SEE in the primary. Vote for the best option. In the general, vote for the least-bad option. Not doing those things supports the greater evil of fascist.

Reinstalled Tropico 6 after a while. It took me so long to figure out how to not lose money (a few years ago). Now I play for a good while, but eventually get bored and give it a break. But it is fun. I’m irritated at the DLC. They seem a little pricey for what you get, which is a couple of buildings and a couple of other things, introducing new systems which is fine but… like… it’s too much specific stuff and not enough general stuff. So I ahve a couple of the DLC and that’s all, and that’s fine.
