Big old lefty. Non-Binary, AuDHD, general purpose nerd. Two of those I only figured out when I hit my forties.

Currently in the south of England with my partner @DJDarren@mendeddrum.org and our two cats Molly and Milo.

I’ve got a few chronic conditions which make me grumpy at times.

To be clear -
Trans women are women
Trans men are men
Non Binary People exist
Black Lives Matter
Fuck The Tories

Don’t be a dick.

Toots to be read in Matt Berry’s voice.

Today is “There Will Come Soft Rains” day. A short story by Ray Bradbury, first published in 1950. It takes place on August 4th 2026. A lone automated house still functions after its owners and presumably the rest of humanity were wiped out by a nuclear blast.

If the tech bros are going to continue denying that consent exists, I’m going to need them to stop forcing me to be polite when refusing their AI or other bullshit.

I don’t want to click “maybe later” but I also don’t want to click “no thanks”.
If you’re just going to ask again in X amount of time regardless, I want an option that says “fuck off”.

I love having Aussies on my feed. When I see things like this first thing in the morning -

“Victorian Teachers are the lowest paid…”

And I think to myself *well… yea, it probably wasn’t a lot back then*

Personally, having a coil inserted is genuinely the most excruciatingly painful experience of my life. I’ve had 3 so far and it has been the same every time, regardless of paracetamol, ibuprofen, naproxen, even the highest dose of cocodamol. The local anaesthetic is useless as the injection is ridiculously painful in itself and it’s never actually done anything to mitigate the pain it’s supposed to prevent in my experience. So why do I keep getting them? Because my periods *vanish*. Completely. I’ve never been pregnant, don’t ever want kids (which I’m aware is likely to make insertion more painful anyway) so three times I’ve put myself through an excruciating procedure and several days of moderate cramping afterwards for 5-8 years of mostly pain free, no bleeding life. I consider it very much worth it.

Can I reach any other afab non-binary folks who’ve gone through / are going through menopause?
I have an appointment with my GP this week to talk about HRT and other options to help with some symptoms I’m having.

Obviously I’d like the symptoms to stop / lessen but I admit I’m feeling kind of uncomfortable with the idea of my body changing or behaving “more feminine” if that makes sense.

I’ve had a mirena coil for years and my periods have been nonexistent and I *love* this. I do not want to suddenly be having periods now.
As I understand, renewing my mirena coil could be part of the solution but am I likely to get more breakthrough bleeding taking HRT on top?

I’ve also mostly managed to avoid talking about any kind of gendered things with the doctors for a long time so I’m a bit antsy how I’m going to deal with that too. My surgery does not seem like a very lgbtq-friendly space.

Advice welcome but mostly I’m reaching out hoping I’m not alone in this kind of thing. I only came out as NB a few years ago so this is all new.

Pretty sure I just witnessed a dust devil! I was sat in the pool in the garden when a sudden really strong gust of wind started up. Like, unusually strong. I looked up to see a bunch of dust and leaves and bits of grass flying round in a cylinder overhead. It went over the neighbours house and then suddenly everything was as still as before.

This question triggered by me needing my Mirena replaced asap and being told the waiting list is “months”. I figured I’d look how much it’d be privately. Not that I can afford it but just to see how much. £300 seems average and that’s just insertion (not replacement) and I don’t see any mention of sedation or pain relief so assume that’s extra. So no, I can’t afford it. However, this sentence on Nuffield’s page pissed me off. Every person I’ve encountered who’s had a coil has had some pain, most of them describe it as moderate to severe.

I’d like to create a border in our garden but every time I’ve tried everything gets demolished by slugs immediately. Egg shells and copper tape were inadequate, beer traps were messy and I kept forgetting them.

Looking for recommendations on how to keep the buggers away please!
We do have cats that roam in the garden so toxins also aren’t ideal. In the UK if that makes any difference.

@vapaad it would be great if that was an option in the UK but we are stuck with whoever we get with the NHS. I’ve not had the best experience with the 3 coils I’ve had, sadly (all with different doctors/hospitals).

@redsad it’s definitely worth it. I’ve had 3 now, trying to arrange my 4th. 15+ years of no periods has been awesome. I just wish there was better awareness among medical professionals about how painful it can be. I’m so sick of seeing “most women don’t feel any pain” or even worse “the cervix doesn’t have nerve endings”. FYI - you can absolutely ask your GP to cut the strings a bit. While they’re a bit stiffer when new, you shouldn’t be able to feel them or have them poke you.

These are the “benefits” of the enforced premium service by the way.

  1. There is no choice of stateroom because in all likelihood there’s at best 1-2 other accessible cabins available at that price
  2. We don’t care when or where we have dinner
  3. I guess in theory they could upgrade us to one of the nicer accessible cabins with a window or a balcony but this seems pretty unlikely
  4. We’d be much less likely to be able to change the booking to another cabin at the price point given how few there are
  5. Again, can’t really choose the cabin. I think all but 4 are on the one deck anyway.
  6. Admittedly a benefit but the cruise is in less than 2 months so we’d be paying the full balance in a month anyway.
  7. This one is ridiculous. I’m not even going to comment.

There’s is one other choice between onboard credit (that would get you about 4 boozy beverages) or car parking. We live right next to the port so we don’t need the latter. @DJDarren

@johnhenrythe3rd@mastodon.social We rent so can’t do a proper pond. I’m considering a small tub or something at some point but I’m not sure if the cats would scare off any potential inhabitants. Or even worse, eat them 😳 We do have hedgehog nearby (or at least we have had previous years) but our neighbour replaced the fence so there’s no way for them to reach our garden any more. I miss our spiky little friend.

@sharongascoigne@mastodonapp.uk yea I’m worried that ironically it’ll be menopause that causes my periods to return. My mirena has completely stopped them for over 10 years now and I am happy to go through the immense pain to replace it if it continues that way. Not sure it’s worth it otherwise. I’m not overly keen on the patches so far but I’m trying to give them a reasonable go.

To add to this, I’m a bit concerned that I only knew the hotel booking was due to open this evening from social media. I didn’t get an email until the one in the last hour saying it was delayed again. I don’t check Facebook that often, though I did see the post on mastodon, it’s very possible I would’ve missed it completely if I’d been less online until the email with the code and then I would’ve panicked. I don’t want to tag anyone because I don’t want to complain, I’m just wondering if there’s a bunch of dwcon regulars out there that might reassure me this is expected and everything will usually work out just fine in the end.
