Going to miss #Monsterdon this weekend because I'm visiting family, but I managed to say hello to Goji-san at least.

mastodon 4.7.3Hi, I'm James. Eternal dilettante and purveyor of nonsense, much of it about #Python, physics, and #cycling. I tend to info-dump about #Unicode if you get me started. I take part in #Monsterdon most Sundays at 9 PM ET. I try not to boost posts without alt text.

"Actually you never enjoyed using the internet back then. You fool. You absolute buffoon" would be a funny take relative to how prevalent it is (in extremely-online spaces like here) if it weren't also so pathetic.
Some folks feel a burning need to smother joy wherever it is found
First time on the Avelia (next-gen Acela) today, you can almost mistake it for civilized rail on the stretch just outside of Boston. Doesn't last long at all, though, once you hit Connecticut you're basically at Northeast Regional speeds anyway 😭
I'm tired, boss

@Da_Gut@dice.camp @diazona@techhub.social @Taweret@timeloop.cafe for a second there I thought you were telling me they made a movie out of the 2004 rampage.
Looks like it's not on Tubi, but if you know somewhere that it is freely available, it seems like it is indeed up our alley.

@glyph@mastodon.social ah, I'm wrong, it was OpenAI:
【OpenAI employees devised and implemented strategies to circumvent paywalls without detection when scraping websites. For example, when Nick Ryder informed Mr. Brockman about “a hack to get around nytimes paywall” to help with Mr. Brockman’s efforts to “scrape[]” The Times’s site, Mr. Brockman responded “ah nice.” SF791.】
That's from § IV(A)(3), page 56 of the filing (page 64 of the PDF ArsTechnica published)

@glyph@mastodon.social I believe it was from the MSFT discovery, a text workspace of some sort where someone shared "hey look I figured out how to get around [org]'s paywalls with the scraper" and the other person's response was "oh, nice"

the "horse-trading" (§ II.B.5) sounds particularly egregious. I think there's a strong case to be made there (well, they *have* made this case) that any proceeds from this trading would have been paid to the plaintiffs if the law were being followed.
it's hard to hang "we're just little uwu fair-use small guys" on it when you're doing deals to sell what you stole to another guy, and buying some of his lifted inventory.

I decided to see what the fuck-up machine would try to do given this problem statement.
The core of its approach was correct and what I knew immediately was going to be how I'd go about it, but as usual it overcomplicated everything and spit out code with some embedded superstitions soaked up from the web (and lies to justify those superstitions when asked for clarification!) that would have an undue maintenance burden if I took the output as a solution to the problem.

I'm going to move my reading to the bad rectangle (medium) and idk maybe I'll try using the stylus to make some notes for myself. I do enjoy being able to annotate a PDF with handwriting

the movie is surreal and kind of uneven, but what else could we really expect if it's supposed to be set from the perspective of these teenagers?
it knows what it wants to do, and it pulls that off pretty well
