Uptime Kuma if I want something to alert me (still trying to decide between ntfy & gotify) Home Assistant is also checking some stuff Watchdog to reboot my Raspberry Pi Zeros when they fall off the wifi Smokeping for a general, long term feel of the network, which might answer your bonus question?

Whilst that may be true, I would expect coreutils has all memory issues debugged by now. I can understand new applications - or perhaps extended versions - to be created in Rust, rather than reinventing perfectly good wheels. It feels like they’re doing this just for the sake of it, and I expect there’s probably better things that could be done with the money / labour

Interesting, thanks. Looks like nothing has been found for 17 years until - presumably - someone pointed AI at the (entire?) suite and found 2 CVEs with a very low (<1%) chance of being exploited. I’d guess that’ll be the last 2 bugs left…

Consider your perfect settings as the part you want to keep (as well as all your documents etc, of course), but the OS will change. Tomorrow you’ll do an update and 2 applications and 10 libraries are now newer… so you probably don’t want to store a “golden image” for too long without redoing it to consider all the updates. Now… with that situation in mind, it’s generally easier to just do a clean install of the distro and reapply your settings. So, depending on what you’ve setup, installed, tweaked & configured, saving that can be done with config files in /etc and /home and maybe a 1-liner for applications to install. That will be smaller and more easily reproducable on all your hardware (and maybe some VMs) How you do that depends on what you’ve changed and your skills… maybe bash, maybe ansible, maybe just copying files - whatever makes sense to you.

I’ve not looked into Nabu Casa much, is it an outbound VPN from our HA instances to their servers? If so, maybe the Nabu Casa admins need a blocklist?

1 - there’s 2 things to consider here… A) Your files (documents, photos, etc) B) Everything else (the Windows / Linux mac operating system, applications, your screensaver, printer defaults, etc) You only need to backup A. It’s up to you if you want / have space for B But, 1st time, backup everything. Then do item 2 (screw up) big time and do a full restore. Once you’ve done that, you’re set for life

I have Visio drawings already, and KeePass files and backup configs and… So, it’s mostly there, but there’s always something that’s not captured, like maybe MAC address I’m trying to resolve in a switch… I was thinking AI could draw, redraw and draw again…

Ah, ok, so you’re usng it as a live agent to interact with the live system as / when you need some info? Hmm, not thought of doing live queries… I don’t have any AI running, hence just thinking of using public LLMs to create a drawing, but maybe this can interact with uptime kuma (for example) and tell me more about what just broke…

I agree this is an old thing, my firewall has blocklists and allowlists to prevent known bad IPs and allow only the countries I travel to. But if Nabu Casa is an outbound VPN, then my blocks won’t work. I’d need them to block Either way it would make sense for HA to also use some crowdsourced blocklists as a 2nd level defense

It’s keeping the drawings / spreadsheets / etc. up to date, to know what changes are required, that I’m thinking about. With multiple switches, VLANs, subnets, etc and I want to add an IoT device somewhere physically convenient, then maybe I now need to trunk the IoT VLAN through multiple devices from the Wifi AP PoE switch, update firewall rules, because this is the 1st device on that physical segment, etc… and then update the drawings afterwards. Now that’s worth automating. I’m looking for a map, not a calculator.

Not heard of mgmtconfig, I’ll take a look. What’s the benefit over Ansible? Most of my home is setup (& maintained) via Ansible (I have a few Pi Zeros scattered around the place with the same monitoring setup installed) but I’ve not found a nice solution to doing setup locally, then reproducing on Ansible, then testing, then refining… if there’s a shortcut to that I’d be interested!

Get 2 devices, set them up the same and put 1 in a cupboard. When you make a change / update and / or the hardware fails, then you can still recover. Personally I have a Fritz router in bridge / pass through mode, then a pfSense firewall - basically a low-ish power microATX (I think) PC - which does all my adblocking and DNS as well as reverse proxy for home assistant, etc. Works well

To help with the overwhelm, If you scanned these important documents then I'm presuming you still have the (paper?) originals? Treat them as your source of truth and work with them first - some might have superceeded your backups anyway. Then, as others have said, follow the 3-2-1 principle, but keep one of the backups as plain and simple files (.pdf I presume) If you lock the files in an app, you're making it even more difficult to restore them later. Personally, I put my files (ie. .pdf, .jpg, etc) in encrypted online file storage (Hetzner) and I made sure I keep instructions elsewhere on how to get them back again (in case I'm... not able to) Keep it simple

I could not for the life of me make the ethernet transfer speeds be more than somewhere around 1-5 MiB/s

That's probably a physical cable issue.

Check the connectors and / or different cables.

It's esp. more important for 1Gbps connections as they're more sensitive than 100Mbps

Well, kinda, but not in practical use. You only lose the data on the failed drive, but - depending on how the PVs and LVs line up, you’ll find it difficult to get them to mount. I also found that clonezilla (partclone, etc) can’t backup just 1 drive or 1 LV, it can only backup the whole lot, which might or might not be an issue

Logseq? I don’t use pen input, so I don’t know if that works well or not, but it has drawing capability, can import PDFs to allow for highlighting and linking to contents It’s now split into the (original) markdown version and a DB version intended for realtime colaboration… so might meet some of your needs?

I feel your pain. I now keep my data backup separate to the OS backups, so a rollback might time travel me back 3 years, but my data’s safe… elsewhere… (Sure. I might still have to do a restore…)

Careful with LVM on individual drives… It looks good initially putting PVs together to create a pool to be carved up, but a drive failure will break it all. You’d really need a RAID layer first (source: my delicate media server)

TBH, I think everyone’s playing with the new thing and a bunch of people will just move on to the next big thing (augmented 3d post-realism AI?) Then, it’ll settle down into decent workflows and become more organised… it’ll just be painful until that happens.

I know I’ll get downvoted for this, but what’s the problem? I see a screenshot of Dell diagnostics running fine Dell BIOS updates come with a checksum to prevent corruption issues, whether it’s installed via Dell’s software, Microsoft Updates or Linux fwupd… I don’t think I’ve had a corruption in ~20 years of using Dell equipment. I have seen settings reset to defaults before - which was mentioned in the release notes…

And at the rate they’re finding the bugs, they’ll all be found by the end of the year. Then no more bugs and all the LLMs can be shutdown.

[AIT] Anyone using AI to map your network / system I was just looking to plug a new zigbee coordinator into a POE switch today, then thought - that’s going to be on the wrong VLAN, or, did I trunk the uplink…? So… that made me think - is anyone using / tried / failed to export device configs, feed it into an AI, and get it to draw out the network??
