The wilderness is where i feel most at home. Far northern California is my home hiking/backpacking turf. Watershed restoration, salmon habit, CA native plants, are passions. Advocate peaceful solutions for living with bears, and other wildlife as neighbors , ( = human behavior modification)

Holy fucking shit AI is causing heaps of problems in the botanical identification world. Northwest floral had an incredible id tool where you could type in various subspecies of a plant and it would give you side by side comparisons in minute details. They've turned it off because of ai bot scraping. Jepsons eflora now makes you take a math test to prove you are human. Kew went to blank pages, This is a fucking nightmare. Grass ID is hard, it can be incredibly confusing and now because of fucking AI my life has become harder. I am proud of botanical sites standing up to ai .... But shit #fuckAi

I worked all day scything the verge of the road. Got home at dark , tired and hungry and nothing quick and easy for dinner fixings. Until I discovered a bag of two kinds bulk dehydrated backpacking soups. One is black beans , the other I think maybe corn chowder. I added spices, onion, oats chia seeds, and a bit of spelt flour to hold it together, made it into veggie burgers. Dang they are good! Salad on the side and I'm feeling good!

In 2020 and 2021, some pot growers to comply with regulations, were required to weedwhack 6 miles of road. ( I had a really bad feeling about the weed whacking, and that gut instinct was more right than I ever could have imagined) , I asked them not to touch my side of the road, they did it anyway. The meadows in my watershed were a rare remarkable example of a California native meadow ecosystem. That one act of weed whacking two years in a row, at the wrong time of year, with dirty weedwhackers, containing seeds from three high invasive grasses, (avena fatua, briza ( rattlesnake grass) red rip gut brome, and star thistle) has destroyed and changed the our meadow ecosystem throughout the watershed in just a few short years. There are no simple solutions. Invasive annual grasses are the tinder that drives out of control wildfires in the west, and creates a fast acting loss of biodiversity . Though some invasive grasses like rattlesnake grass can be controlled with fire, other like avena fatua, cannot be. Avena fatua is even immune to herbacides, and can dominate after a fire. It is unbelievable how dense these grasses grow, taking up every square inch of soil, nothing can compete. They create thick mats of material that dries out in late spring. Four years ago I started experimenting with hand pulling the avena fatua that dominated a steep cut bank. What happened is I got a bank of native clover. The first year it dominated, this year I only found 5 stalks, and the seed bank that it was suppressing was three species of ca native clover. Tom Cat, foothill, and red, and ca wooly sunflowers popping up too. What a little weeding can do!

I ran into a friend in town and she's been trying to find me on Mastodon, and I've looked for her. We both are at a loss how to look people up, it should be simple. Maybe it is but we are luddites. Can someone explain how to do it?

@Anke@social.scribblers.club @CommonMugwort@social.coop I use burlap a lot to cover any exposed wood framing when I'm doing natural plastering. I seek out the coarsest, loosest weave coffee sacks, because cobb adheres to it really well. I've noticed there are differences in the texture and color of coffee sacks. I'm guessing the lighter rougher material may be sisal , and the darker softer is jute. Thanks for looking that up!

And my 6 oz klymat sleeping pad. I've had my whisper light stove for decades. And those new fangled Sawyer mini water purifiers. That I can have my base weight down to under ten lbs, and still be comfortable is a marvel.

Damn it cost me $100 to fill up 3/4 of a tank of gas. Last week it was $70. I really want to go hiking , do a short backpacking trip but I seriously can't afford to go anywhere. I'll only be going to town once week . I hate trump. I may make a few Trump/Vance voodoo dolls I can hang upside down on an elastic cord and whack with a stick every time I pass by.

What a nightmare I lost my phone and had to get a new one, and the first place told me everything was lost, contacts photos, everything, so I went to a different place and a young woman managed to get my contacts and photos, but my writers app is gone, many of my files are gone, even tho everything was backed up, and the stupid find your phone app totally failed. It's like my phone fell into a blackhole.
What's worse is uscellular got gobbled up by T-Mobile, my prepaid us cellular gave me unlimited data and hotspot, T-Mobile, and Verizon, don't have any plans with hot spots with prepaid, and I can't do a contract plan because I've never had a credit card. So there is no way for me to get a hot spot. plus I'm paying more and getting way less

@deepmud So an individual avocado flower would need both parts. I have pineapple guavas that get showy flowers but don't produce fruit. I shall have a look and see if they have both parts. Some people insist pineapple guavas are self pollinating , but others say you need a male and female. I'm going to look into it more. The shrubs are quite large. I want fruit!

Well I had a big culinary flop today. I was trying to make mana bread, which is sprouted grains ground up and made into loaves then put in a very low temp oven or a dehydrator. I've made it before in the dehydrator and it usually takes about a day and a half. I checked on it today less than 24 hrs, and it had turned dry and crispy all the way through, like a seed cake for birds, instead of soft and chewy. It came out very much like that Ezekiel brand of pricey sprouted cereal. So I crushed it up and will eat it like cereal
