Did you know the ancient Chinese used flooding as a weapon of war, or that the Dutch adopted this strategy to defend Holland in the 1500s, or that Machiavelli and Leonardo conspired to steal a river? Read these stories in my new book about #water, #war, and #peace. https://thenewpress.org/books/when-the-well-is-dry/

Did you know the British destroyed the only steam water pump in America during the Revolutionary War, or that the LA aqueduct was often bombed by farmers angry that Los Angeles was stealing their water? In mid-September 2026, NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported Antarctic sea ice reached its annual maximum extent -- the third-lowest maximum on record -- as global warming from #climate change continues to reduce polar ice. https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/antarctic-sea-ice-grows-to-its-2026-maximum/

Here is our new journal article "Global hotspots and trends of ecological water scarcity in river basins" in Oxford's National Science Review. In the 2000s, 412 watersheds experienced ecological #water scarcity and affected areas are expanding. https://academic.oup.com/nsr/advance-article/doi/10.1093/nsr/nwag637/8910535?guestAccessKey=7357902e-3bec-486a-a7a9-cabe4120bd6b

If you need any more evidence that MAGA and Trump-authoritarians are going to refuse to accept the results of any US election they lose, just listen to the growing chorus of MAGAs calling for a coup and military overthrow of a newly elected Brazilian government they don't like.

Very excited that my new book, "When the Well is Dry" is now being released! It tackles the long history of violence over water resources and how to move from conflict to cooperation. And apparently this now has to be said: not a single piece of it was written, edited, produced, or modified by AI.

Check out this amazing story (to me, anyway) of a 1000-mile-long cloud that consistently forms and disappears on #Mars. As a climate and water scientist, this fascinates me. https://www.livescience.com/space/mars/1-000-mile-long-cloud-that-forms-and-vanishes-on-mars-every-day-obeys-exotic-physics-never-seen-on-earth

Classic Trump sleight-of-hand and misdirection. Xi Jinping & Donald Trump agreed for China to buy 10m tonnes of US #coal in 2027 and 2028. BUT in 2024, we exported 12m tonnes to China. When Trump put tariffs on China, they stopped buying it and it dropped to zero. So Trump breaks something and then claims success when he seems to fix it. And 10m tonnes is about 2% of US coal production, so this is no boost to the dying US coal industry. https://www.carbonbrief.org/china-briefing-1-octob...

Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" was released on this day 62 years ago. I have a first edition & come back to it often, including this paragraph in the chapter "Obligation to Endure." It's worth reading. "We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts."

Posting this from another platform via Mrs. Betty Bowers. The major platforms—Facebook, YouTube, and X—are all refusing to show the trailer for the upcoming documentary that eviscerates the ridiculous pest Elon Musk. So I guess we have to do our part to make sure it is seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY_8SyndC10

You know what? If Trump et al. really cared about #nationalsecurity, they would be working hard to slow #climate change, which hundreds of defense and intelligence agency assessments (pre-Trump) have acknowledged are actual security threats. I document them here: https://www.gleick.com/blog/climate-change-water-the-environment-and-national-security-an-annotated

Given the outrageous, dangerous, and outright false statements made about how the polio (and other) #vaccine was a "fraud" (at the Children's Health Defense conference), here's a reminder of what a massive success it was. RFK Jr. & his minions must be stopped from destroying the US healthcare system.

We're losing the generation of great scientists that developed the first tools to understand how we're changing the #climate & then warned us about the consequences. Remembering them & building on their work is our responsibility to their legacy. RIP Dr. Robert E. Dickinson https://fromtheprow.agu.org/robert-e-dickinson-obituary/
