Serious #USPol question: How did Rashida Tlaib survive AIPAC? #gaza #palestine #aipac #israel #RashidaTlaib

Something I can't say on #facebook without repercussions from family and friends: faith is dead, long live faith. I left the #lds church after about 40 years (Exodus joke here). The main reason was that I just stopped believing all the doctrine. Every "spiritual experience" I'd ever had could finally be explained much more easily by basic things I understood about humans and myself than by religious concepts. And since then I have those "spiritual exp...

@ekis Thanks. She certainly seems very impressive as a person and candidate. I was just hit hard by two members of The Squad losing their seats due to AIPAC this past summer, and here is Tlaib being outspoken about Gaza and Palestine, then winning her own race by margins far in excess of the margins Harris received. It gives me hope.

All these fellow liberals talking about moving to Canada or Europe... I'm wondering if I can move to Rashida Tlaib's district, or AOC's. #uspol #rashidatlaib #aoc #envy

@somcak This was a thing in the 60s and 70s in the US and Europe, right? A branch of radical feminism, maybe?

I'm really not one for direct action with even a little risk. I'm more the "post a rant about fascist assholes on facebook" type. However, someone attached a stupid Trump/misinformation flag to an overpass crossing a freeway in my town. My housemate sent me a photo. She was upset about having to drive under it every day to work. So I took it down. Even though I was basically removing litter from public property it was a little nerve-wracking (racking? IDK). Bu...

@ceartas @dikleyt@deadinsi.de @burnoutqueen I don't think Obama was naive or trusting at all. I think he's one of the most sophisticated and successful politicians in US history, which is not to say he did good things; he was just very, very good at being a politician.

@somcak I find this super interesting. Personally, it probably doesn't affect me at all (I mean, the number of women on the planet who might have sex with me at some point before I die is very small and probably not overlapping too much with the 4B movement). I am sometimes in favor of movements or actions that push things to their logical conclusions. Men have, indeed, caused a lot of the problems on the planet, and those causing the most trouble also seem desperately to need women. S...

@rallias Did you figure out why? (I mean, as a researcher who has done stuff like this I have ideas, but it sounds like you have worked out the solution to what's going on with your surveys).

@rallias Ah, that makes sense. I've applied for funding in the past to do surveys, and to pay participants for their time. It's an entire thing. The people holding the purse strings (e.g., state governments, universities, granting foundations) can get really weird and obsessive about "preventing abuse" of money given to participants. All the (very few) times I've had money for participants, the funders insisted on gift cards and having participants sig...

@somcak Sweet guys FTW! No judgment for anyone joining such a movement. I've known too many women who have had absolutely awful experiences with one or more men.

@Charlotte Look, her job is HARD. Nobody can begrudge her a little joy in the day-to-day.

@jwz Most of this is applicable in most situations (I've found). However, I've always taken issue with the first several items--well, not with those items, but with the apparent intent of people sharing this list online, at work, etc. Yes, those are ways to bog an organization down, but many of them are also ways to prevent management from abusing employees or shoving through unhelpful initiatives that will harm many people (and the company).

@ciggysmokebringer @dikleyt@deadinsi.de @ceartas @burnoutqueen Sometime in the 1st or 2nd year of Trump 1.0 I began to aggressively avoid all the breathless headlines like "NOW TRUMP IS REALLY SCREWED..." Those stories played to many Democrats' desire to see justice happen, but they did so cynically, I think. The people/outlets publishing those things seemed to make a mini industry out of that kind of just-around-the-corner comeuppance story. The wheels of justice did...
