I wish someone would care that Mastodon’s UI has been broken for years. Why do I have to click the three dots at the top of a column 20 times a day just to get it to load new posts?!

Also Settings -> Account -> Authorized Apps has been broken forever now :-/

"Now that we've solved AI..." Dude, we haven't solved AI. We've gotten surprisingly good at statistical modeling, but let's not confuse one ingredient with the whole recipe.

The law of entropy states that disorder always increases. We call this bitrot when it happens to code, technical debt when it happens to architecture, and a product roadmap when it happens to management.

For decades managers searched for a way to measure developer productivity. Now AI has given them tokens, and they're convinced they've discovered the holy grail. We spent 50 years trying to get rid of managers counting lines of code just for them to reinvent it with extra steps and a cloud bill.

We spent decades making computers easier to use, only to end up with people opening a terminal to fix the things that supposedly made computers easier to use.

A terminal UI is just a GUI where the graphics card is your imagination and the rendering engine is 50 years of accumulated technical debt.

Asking a software developer why they didn't just vibe-code their project is like asking a LEGO enthusiast why they didn't just buy the finished Millennium Falcon.

Yeah ok, Rust looks ugly, but have you seen a Perl one-liner after someone's been awake for 36 hours?

12 months ago, you saw something and wondered if it was AI. Now you see something and just assume it's fake. Cool timeline, apparently we made reality the uncanny valley.

The actual question nobody seems to be asking: Can we create a human & machine readable description of what software is **supposed** to mean, independently of the implementation that realizes it? Because if generated code is the future, code stops being the source of truth. A programming language describes the implementation, but it isn't the specification. The spec needs to become the program and we'll need languages built around that idea.

We keep saying we're "adding AI to our app". I fear that'll age about as well as "adding internet support". We still think in terms of applications because that's the paradigm we grew up with. But perhaps an app was always just a temporary interface between human intent and, uhm, computation? In suspect in the future, apps become capabilities. The AI becomes the interface layer: dynamically rendering a UI, starting a voice chat, or s...
