The remains of Dunskey Castle, on the cliffs above Portpatrick. On a stormlashed evening, you can just hear the skirl of pipes down in the caves below. This place has seen turbulent times. #blackandwhitephotography #Scotland #Galloway #HappyHalloween

The Hole Stone (or Crow Stone) in Galloway. Local tradition says that it was used during marriage ceremomies, by joining hands through the hole. A similar tradition is attached to St Kennera's Cross, a 10th century disc headed cross, pierced at the four quarters, at nearby Kirkinner. It stands close to the White Cairn and another stone reputedly once accompanied it, which had gone by the mid-1800s. #Scotland #History #StandingStoneSunday

On dark, windy nights like these, standing on the beach below the ruins of Kirkmaiden Church, as the waves lash the shore, you swear you can hear the wraith bell tolling from the depths of Luce Bay, calling another McCulloch to their fate. #blackandwhitephotography #Scotland

@deepsage There absolutely are. On the other side of Bladnoch Valley is Torhouse Stone Circle and a funerary landscape. To the south is The Wren's Egg and standing stones, aligned to the Winter Solstice sunset. Drumtroddan Stone Row points to Summer Solstice sunrise over the Galloway Hill and Drughdool Mote is a large connicle earth mound, like Silbury Hill, where Neolithic timber avenues and circles were excavated.

Crossmichael Parish Church - the main body dates from around 1750, but the distinctive tower is possibly early 1600s. It sits on a small knoll and has probably been a site of worship since ancient times. #blackandwhitephotography #Scotland #Galloway #SouthernScotland

Drumtroddan Standing Stones in Galloway. One of the first sites to be donated into state care following the 1882 Ancient Monuments Act, by Herbert Maxwell. A stone fell a few years ago, leaving just a single one remaining. Historic Environment Scotland have decided against restoring the fallen stone, declaring the money better spent elsewhere. This isn't state care, it is managed decline. What would Herbert Maxwell think now? #StandingStoneSunday #Scotland
