Reminder that fedi is an echo chamber in general, but it's an echo chamber _especially_ when it comes to LLMs. Go to literally any IRL tech-related community, any other social media platform or heck, just talk to your relatives and friends IRL. The thoughts and opinions on this site, esp. on this topic, do not in any way reflect a majority opinion.

@pojntfx@mastodon.social i think this is exactly the point why people want and use this space, honestly. What you're describing as "out of touch" is a judgment that I respectfully refuse. This space is not out of touch, it's OPINIONATED, and choose to distance itself from the general sentiment about most technological trend. For good reasons, if you ask me. Don't mistake opposition for ignorance.

@pojntfx@mastodon.social You may be interested to learn that the blind community on the fediverse is much less of an echo chamber especially when it comes to LLMs. My guess is that we skew the other way, that is, in favor of and actively using LLMs, though not universally. My guess is that it's because we mostly came to fedi en masse in late 2022 when Elon Musk bought Twitter and promptly fired the accessibility team. Whereas I guess many others come here for explicitly ideological reasons.

@pojntfx@mastodon.social well for me, it's 2 sided. In a way, I'm glad there are other people than I that thinks that big LLM companies are toxic AF. And touching it is enabling these companies. But also, it creates a lot of anxiety for me because I see how much most of the world doesn't give a f***. It's not my first rodeo, though. Been talking about Linux and FLOSS since mid-00s. So I always was part of the rebels. I think what hurts me the most is big FLOSS project who made me aware of these copyright issues that would hide knowledge away behind a predatory contract that are now embracing the biggest hijack of knowledge of humanity, and hiding the whole knowledge of the world with the most addictive paywall. That sicks a lot, because it's a backstab. Again, I have nothing against the technology, apart from the fact that it is a catastrophic ecological disaster at the scale the AI companies want to play at. What I have a big issue with, is the financial hype behind this push by tech bros VC. It was hashtag web3 before, and hashtag metaverse after. It is hashtag ai now. And this concentration of power is never good. FLOSS was always about distributing the knowledge accross people. Here it is paywalling the knowledge in a predatory environment that will rip you from you way to earn money. As you may pay gas to go to work, now you will pay for your "right" to work with AI. I could totally see OpenAI sue wikipedia a few years from now for unfair use of their knowledge base. We're such in a weird timeline than anything is possible. So yes, the fediverse is biased as well. But I fell it's biased with most of its heart in the right place. (Clearly not perfect for many other topics, but I guess we need to live with imperfect. And for me, it's the least imperfect. I just need to stay aware that it's an echo chamber.)

@pojntfx@mastodon.social it's like that horror movie "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers", only it's more like "Invasion of the Autonomy Snatchers"

@pojntfx@mastodon.social im utterly surrounded by ai shit on all sides the minute i leave the house, four straight years of people breathlessly repeating every corpo talking point and seem almost excited to have their jobs replaced by sam altman, dad sends me pdfs he didnt read generated by chatgpt, relatives asking what i think and immediately changing the subject the moment i am less than 100% onboard, every billboard bus ad and restaurant menu are generated. but fedi anti-ai ppl are also sometimes annoying

@pojntfx@mastodon.social With regards to AI, I am only on here because I want exposure to old school technologists and principled AI refusers. Similarly I sometimes peek at X to find out what AI researchers and fascists are doing, and BlueSky to eavesdrop on US Dem mediocrities & a few sharp left-wing podcasters. That said I was just in a coffee shop yesterday overhearing a normie conversation about how AI will kill us all. High adoption AND bitter resistance is happening, sometimes from the same people.

@pojntfx@mastodon.social If everybody else on the Fediverse can deal with AI being shoved down our throats 24/7, I think you can learn to deal with a single space that's anti-AI.

@pojntfx@mastodon.social I think it'll soon percolate out to the normies. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuccfEQgIeY
