I wrote about the ICEBlock app, the developer's infuriating HOPE talk, and how it's unfortunately basically activism theater https://micahflee.com/unfortunately-the-iceblock-app-is-activism-theater/

@micahflee This is the unfortunate reality that we all need to get used to, as coding is easier than ever, and due diligence harder that it has ever been. Hope these types of stories reaches the masses, however unlikely.

@micahflee Yeah, but that theater drew coders' attention to the ugliness of ICE, showed that someone who codes is both politically engaged and isn't that far-right (not so true 15 years ago, see gamergate), and stirred up mud so we know where in the swamp our boots will get stuck if we step there. In so many ways we're still in learning phase vs. effective phase. I'm gonna learn from the theater. But, you know, piss on the front steps if you must. I'll learn to walk around it.

@micahflee It's really hard to make a useful tool unless you build it with the people who use it and have a feedback loop going to make it do what they need most. This isn't fun work, but for things like this it is god's work.

@micahflee Do you know of similar concerns about websites like https://stopice.net/ ? I say "like" that one because I don't know of others, but I'm guessing they are around. stopice.net does at least differentiate between 'confirmed' and 'unconfirmed' alerts on the map, although it is not clear from reading through the descriptions how they are vetted.

@micahflee I had the privilege of going to HOPE this year and unfortunately (fortunately?) missed this shitshow of a talk! Some of my friends did go, and their takeaway was that this guy isn't an activist, not a hacker, not even a developer really; he's just a product owner. For anyone that didnt watch the whole thing, he is at one point asked the question, "why do you think you have the right to make unilateral decisions for entire communities?" His response was basically "because it's *my* app" ๐Ÿ™„ like jfc if that doesn't encapsulate this guy's entire fucking attitude... not even to mention his complete lack of understanding of many basic security concepts. His talk was the very last one at HOPE, and I'm not entirely sure why the organizers did that bc that seems significant to me. Either way, for all the disagreements and differing ideologies at HOPE over the weekend, it was nice that at the very end we could all unite on how garbage this app is.

@micahflee wow, that's unfortunate. Thanks for the writeup. Do you know of more worthy anti-ICE software efforts we could get behind, efforts that are well-informed about the actual needs of the affected communities?

@micahflee someday programmers will learn to talk to the people they are making the programs for. Someday.

@micahflee instead of character assassination, make a better app that addresses your concerns. ๐Ÿ™„
