@hn100@social.lansky.name I believe this is exactly what many different accounts here were predicting would happen more than a year ago! (I dont include myself, I was just repeating what others had already said)

@hn100@social.lansky.name And you can pay human employees less if you start telling them they are going to get replaced with AI, so AI is still highly useful for cutting costs. Make them do more for less, what is not to like? AI revolution, woo-hoo! 🤠

@hn100@social.lansky.name @cstross@wandering.shop And AI doesn’t learn. Yes, you can add alot more context whereby the AI agent performs better and improve the result, but a person at some point will be able to take over the task instead of being an assistent.

@hn100@social.lansky.name the article seems to take one quote as basis for the title: "For my team, the cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees" That doesn't say that it's better or worse, just that one number is bigger than the other. Is that because the fired so many people? Is the compute replacing people of the same, less or more value? Not mentioned. That makes it for me too early to cheer for the death of widespread ai.

@hn100@social.lansky.name but at least those senior managers don't have to deal with pesky humans and probably believe they're escaping eternal damnation when their AGI god wakes up

@hn100@social.lansky.name @quixoticgeek@social.v.st interesting that the cost is already proving a problem while the AI companies still subsidise the cost.

Microsoft did not report that. If they did, it wasn't in the article.

@hn100@social.lansky.name technology of any sort typically is, but the cost just gets passed onto the consumer, giving its owners a competitive advantage. Voilà, everything is more expensive. If they actually paid for their toys themselves the world wouldn't be so fucked.

@hn100@social.lansky.name Microsoft tells lies so don't listen to those fucked clowns when they talk. I am a person who tells the truth to the best of my ability, in good faith, largely for the benefit of the systems of life of which we are all part. I know, and am telling you now, that AI costs way more than paying employees to do work. some credible evidence from MIT. https://mlq.ai/media/quarterly_decks/v0.1_State_of_AI_in_Business_2025_Report.pdf

@rozeboosje@masto.ai 2026-05-23 13:27
@hn100@social.lansky.name That was my assessment from the start of the hype. Like every tool I've seen that promised it would let you develop things "10x faster", they always tend to speed up routine tasks at first, but then you have to hack around their limitations to such an extent that not only do you lose all the gains you appeared to make at the start, but you get so bogged down that ultimately it costs you money. Always been like that, no sign of it changing with AI either.

@adventure_tense@mapstodon.space 2026-05-23 15:42
@hn100@social.lansky.name One problem is that business efficiency is always defined by how many people are not required. Not by the results of good management and sustainability. We will "invest" in equipment, but investing in people is considered waste. We view people like we did the redwoods, a resource of intelligence to exploit until we use it up, then move on. Corporations can never replace a community. There is none. Just extraction.

@joXn@wandering.shop 2026-05-23 21:08
@hn100@social.lansky.name @cstross@wandering.shop but it lets you send money to your capitalist buddies rather than wasting it on your staff, and that has to be worth something
-
@v_d_richards@literatur.social 2026-05-23 21:14
@hn100@social.lansky.name And it does even shitier code, that humans have ro fix later. So Ai is doing nothing than cost money and make data thieves rich while making hardware expensive and fuck the climate.
