@jesse fantastic article, and while I don’t want to take away from the crisis with insulin prices, I don’t think any meds should be able to make a profit. Keep in mind, it’s not the lab scientists who make the breakthrough who are making massive amount of money, it’s the executives who price gouge the needy and then make several times what they put into development. So the people who want to study the solutions/treatments for these diseases will always be there and do not need to be paid exorbitant fees. However, I can see why Type 1 diabetes is a thought provoking test case. People realize that type 1 tends to affect patients when they are younger children, and it’s an autoimmune disease, so the idea is that no one can “cause” type 1. It’s basically blameless. But would that extend to people with high cholesterol living in a food desert? Or people off south Asian descent who develop type 2 diabetes? Or people like me who rely on antidepressants to keep our brain chemistry in check? I would hate to make this case, and then only treat people who society deems “worthy” of treatment who receive the benefit of lower-priced medications. All this to say I completely agree and support these kinds of initiatives, I just hope the same kind of political will is thrown at other medications in the future.
