@Nickiquote@mstdn.social I watched Alien around that age and it didn’t do me any harm — likewise The Thing. (Then again I do post on mastodon so who’s to say if I’m well adjusted)

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social As I told my 14yo when he turned 12, “12 years old is old enough to watch movies they’re not old enough to watch.” Event Horizon. We also were watching the The Thing The Hellraiser movies would be awkward to watch together

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social "The Gate" was the first 15 Certificate (UK Cinema rating) movie I legally saw in the Cinema. I remember enjoying it but don't think I have seen it since.

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Evil Dead trilogy by Sam Raimi. It's a lot of stooges slap stick with some jump scares. I recommend them in reverse order. Start with Army of Darkness then Evil Dead 2 then the Evil Dead. Candyman was the cheesiest and most terrifying thing I ever watched. My high school date and I had to leave the dome light on in the car on the drive home. Scream movies are funny and fun. I'm a big fan of zombie movies. I don't find them scary. Sean of the Deaf, Zombieland, etc.

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Stephen King´s "It" is an obvious choice. There´s even children as the main cast, so it must be age appropriate, right? But none of our friends ever ask me to babysit, so that´s that.

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social a mature 12 might be a little young for The Thing or Alien, which are two of my favourite films, despite me not actually liking horror movies. Shaun of the Dead? Does that count? Does it make sense if you've not seen other zombie movies? Is Get Out a horror movie? Maybe sort of?

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is a great creature feature that's age appropriate. The Escape Room films might not be horror but they're also very fun. I like to think of them as Saw for teenagers, without all the torture and blood and stuff, just crazy games/scenarios. 47 Meters Down is more survival thriller but is definitely scary. I'm sort of blanking on more PG13 films I could suggest right now. M3gan maybe.

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Haven't read the replies yet but am currently going through the same with my (admittedly not quite the same situation) 15 year old. Although she doesn't have an enormous appetite for gore or psychologically disturbing films. I've suggested Only Lovers Left Alive (I LOVE GLOOM), A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (maybe a bit much with the rape/drugs/vampire attack scene) and Let Me In/Let The Right One In. As I write this, I suspect they might be a bit much. On our end we have compromised and are currently watching the hard-hitting Spirited Away, in which there are GHOSTS. Or something - I still don't fully understand it. However we also quite enjoyed films like Happy Death Day, Ready or Not, The Babysitter, Run Sweetheart Run, and possibly a bit much - They Will Kill You. 😊❤️
