A woman is suing Fargo ND police for falsely imprisoning her for SIX MONTHS based on a bad facial recognition hit. She’d never set foot in ND, and the photo the cops fed into the recognition database didn’t look anything like her. She lost her home, car, and possessions while incarcerated. She’s suing for $10 million. To me, that honestly seems reasonable. Fuck those cops. Losing six months, everything you own, and having a felony arrest wrongly show up in AI shit for decades is a problem.

Had watched the first three episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens and so far it doesn’t seem as bad as some people thought a while ago before release. Watching the "thoughts" of DeepSeek scroll by as I'm trying it out for a small coding project, I'm amazed it can second-guess itself so much and still manage to make something reasonably good.

@j2bryson I think it's mildly ridiculous to write an AI agent to "maximize your experience", but unless you hate association with mildly ridiculous people I don't think that's a reason to withdraw? Unless I misunderstand something, trying to impress someone isn't usually something you needs consent for, even if you botch it

@955_36 @nickfarr At the risk of ruining a good joke (and a good point), the "recursive self-improvement" usually involves interacting with the world of some sort. So new information *does* get into the system. Whether new meat into the sausage mixed with the old meat is enough to make it more eatable is another question.

@j2bryson well, first four notes maybe. I'd heard that song before (Max Raabe & Palast's version) and didn't think it sounded that much like the Muppet show theme, it goes off in another direction very quickly.

@j2bryson If you hear it that way, fair enough I guess, but I really doubt they plagiarized it. Weimar-era "light music" composers were extremely prolific, it's going to be hard to not sound a bit like something they wrote, especially if you aim for showy, vaudeville-y, cabaret-y music.

@lisyarus I love them. Always loved them (Pirates!, Elite 2, Sim City, Dwarf Fortress). Modded Minecraft fills that niche for me today. All games have goals, but a great game is one where you can ignore them, make up your own, take it in your own tempo and still have fun.
