1️⃣ Gaza was al meer dan 16 jaar een concentratiekamp waar je niet zomaar in of uit kon, met zeer hoge werkloosheidscijfers en waarbij meer dan de helft van de 2,2 miljoen tellende bevolking afhankelijk was van voedselhulp. Raketten vanuit Gaza uit protest tegen de gevangenisbewaarders werden steevast beantwoord met disproportioneel geweld - met telkens véél meer Palestijnse doden en gewonden dan Israëliërs.
2️⃣ Een stijging van het geweld tegen Palestijnen op de Westbank en hen steeds meer isoleren middels muren en wegblokkades - alles in toenemende mate gesteund door politici, met name Itamar Ben Gvir en Bezalel Smotrich.
3️⃣ Het steeds verder "opslokken" van oost-Jerusalem en frequenter onteren van de Al Aqsa moskee.
4️⃣ Meer dan 5000 Palestijnen, waaronder vrouwen en kinderen, in Israëlische detentie onder toenemend onmenselijke omstandigheden (inclusief martelingen). Van die 5000+ meer dan 1200 vastgehouden zonder vorm van proces (administratieve detentie).
5️⃣ Normalisatie van de huidige situatie met steeds minder zicht op een twee-staten oplossing (waarvan westerse landen claimen dat te eisen maar waar niemand naar handelt). Economisch gedreven deals tussen Moslimlanden (die eerder de Palestijnen steunden) zoals Saoudi-Arabië met Israël verergerden de situatie. Op 22 sept. 2023 toonde Netanyahu een landkaart van Israël waarop de Palestijnse gebieden verdwenen waren op een VN-vergadering.
Het doel van de leiding van Hamas was waarschijnlijk zoveel als mogelijk Israëliërs gijzelen om de wereld wakker te schudden, Palestijnse gevangenen vrij te krijgen en te voorkómen dat een Palestijnse staat onmogelijk werd.
Naar verluidt was Hamas niet op de hoogte van het Nova muziekfestival en had niet gerekend op de "Hannibal doctrine" (waarbij de IDF Israëliërs heeft gedood om te voorkómen dat zij gegijzeld zouden worden).
Kortom, westerse landen en Israël hebben de wanhoopsdaad van Hamas uitgelokt. Israël deed dat bewust om westerse landen ervan te overtuigen dat Palestijnen terroristen zijn en het "altijd Joden zijn die worden bedreigd", daarbij rekenend op de onvoorwaardelijke steun vanuit de VS (zowel Republikeinen als Democraten).

Before the first Aliyot, Jews made up barely 3% of the population.
#Palestine was not an empty desert. It was a prosperous territory of the Ottoman Empire, with banks, industry, and agricultural exports that rivaled those of Italy.
Its population grew endogenously precisely because it was a thriving place.
Much of the population living today in #Gaza and the #WestBank descends from the families expelled from the lands that now make up #Israel.
