Joint Statement From New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health on Pediatric Measles-Associated Death in Lewis County
ALBANY, N.Y. (November 2, 2026) – Based on information currently available, the New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health issued the following joint statement on the first known measles-associated death in New York State in more than 30 years:
"We are deeply saddened by the death of a child in Lewis County associated with the ongoing measles outbreak. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the child's family and loved ones and ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
"Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications and death. Vaccination is the best protection against measles.
"The Department has offered resources to Lewis County to assist with community outreach and support local vaccination efforts – both in response to this case, and as part of our ongoing efforts to support counties that are facing this ongoing measles outbreak.
"We urge New Yorkers to ensure they are up to date on measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations and speak to their healthcare provider about immunizations."

"...That perfect petri dish exists right now, a ProPublica investigation found. For over two months, an outbreak of bird flu has raged uncontrolled on a Utah farm that raises thousands of mink for fur. Mink have lungs and airways that on a cellular level are remarkably similar to those of people; they have caught and spread other flus and infected some humans with COVID-19.
Instead of trying to stop the outbreak and prevent it from spilling into humans, state and federal officials have done little except try to keep its existence quiet, our investigation shows. ..."

A dairy farm worker in Washington state has tested positive for H5N1 bird flu after exposure to infected cows, the first human case of the virus in the US this year. Washington health officials say the person is not seriously ill and is isolating at home, and that the risk to the public remains low.
The case came a week after the state's first H5N1 detections in dairy cattle, at two farms in Yakima County. Since the virus spilled over into US dairy herds in 2024 it has infected more than 1,000 herds, and there have been at least 72 human cases in the US, almost all after close contact with sick animals. Two people died.
Case numbers are thought to be a big undercount: mild cases look like a cold or Covid, and many dairy workers avoid voluntary testing for fear of contact with law enforcement.

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months.
Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic.
But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.
