I cite that last example, which comes from another Dan Olson documentary about the strange GameStop #investment cult which hinges upon "MOASS" (yet another abbreviation, yet another magic spell), because it's an especially stark example of the irrationality of the magical thinking at work. The premise of the MOASS cult (the "Mother Of All Short Squeezes") is simple: an imaginary war is supposedly raging between evil short-sellers who live only to destroy good honest corporations by torpedoing the value of their #stocks, and true $GME believers who "own the float" (i.e. the GameStop cultists think they own ALL the legitimate $GME shares being traded, whereas the short-sellers have somehow faked the shares they're trading.) There's one more point I'd like to make before wrapping up this excessively lengthy thread, and that's the value of #NFT simply as an abbreviation. The world of #finance scams and #investment gambling etc. is a world ruled by magical thinking. Again, desperation is the cause for this: only desperate people need to chase after get-rich-quick schemes and thus they're inclined out of desperation to believe in unlikely miracles. At least in the "Western" mindset, the notion of #magic is intimately mixed up with the idea of the spell, which in its ideal "Western" form appears in a zillion works of fiction, like in Harry Potter: a short incantation that produces a desired instantaneous result. A "blue chip" #investment is supposed to be a sure bet, a license to print money, and the term derives from the conventions of gambling in poker: the blue chips (the literal discs of plastic) are treated as the most valuable. The #crypto "coins" and the NFT "tokens" and other such #blockchain gimmicks are intrinsically worthless or very nearly worthless just like cheap plastic poker chips, but they're shuffled about in a context in which they're meant to represent extreme wealth...or at least, the potential to be exchanged for extreme wealth.
