The day after the European *BSD event of the year! 😈⛳🐡

We would like to thank all the attendees who made time to visit the event in Brussels 🇧🇪. Great to read so many great comments here... much :flan_heart:

One more time a A BIG UP to OC for taking care of us these days. :flan_heart:

If you missed a talk or couldn't attend at all, all the videos are online! https://exquisite.tube/c/ebc2026/videos

Finally, the talk delivered a refreshingly critical take on how AI is disrupting the cybersecurity landscape. While AI tools can help seasoned security pros, they’ve also unleashed a massive wave of "AI slop" low-effort, AI-generated vulnerability reports submitted by internet users chasing CVE clout. OpenBSD maintainers are now burning days analyzing hallucinated security risks, non-exploitable compiler behaviors, and broken "reproducers" that don't even send valid network packets. Instead of actually making software safer, unvetted AI bug hunting is currently bogging down maintainers in endless administrative noise. #openbsd #bsd #eurobsdcon #EuroBSDCon2026

With host-side SEV support, multi-core virtualization, and networking now functional in bhyve, the team is working on upstreaming the code to the main FreeBSD repository.

Future milestones include upgrading to newer SEV generations like SEV-ES for encrypted CPU register states and SEV-SNP for hardware memory integrity protection as well as updating the FreeBSD kernel to run seamlessly as an encrypted guest OS using memory C-bit handling and bounce buffers.

And for you, mere mortal, what does all of this actually mean? It means true cloud privacy without having to blindly trust anyone. Whether you're hosting sensitive customer data, financial workloads, or proprietary algorithms, confidential computing ensures that not even your cloud provider or a rogue admin with full root access can peek into your running memory.

By bringing AMD SEV to FreeBSD, top-tier, silicon-enforced protection stops being an exclusive enterprise luxury and becomes part of the open-source toolkit.

Bottom line: your data is finally locked down in transit, at rest, and right down to the hardware while in use.

Mateusz Piotrowski - Looney Tunes: FreeBSD, rsync, and ZFS Earlier this year I conducted a performance investigation and tuning of a slow backup job. Essentially, a single rsync syncing a deeply nested directory tree with thousands of files over the network onto a ZFS dataset on a remote server. After a reboot of the remote server, the backup would be received and saved on a local filesystem in about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, as the uptime grew the rsync would run for days on end instead of minutes. During the talk I will share with you how I figured out where rsync's bottleneck was and what I did to make the syncing finish within the expected timeframe of 10 minutes. I will show you what tools I used during the investigation to discover what parts of the system are screaming for help and to verify my hypothesis of where the root cause is. We will explore tuning of caching on FreeBSD, ZFS performance metrics, and using DTrace to get a closer look at system's internals. That's all Folks!

So, yeah. Another #EuroBSDCon is behind us, and we're sad to leave. It has been incredible meeting all the old farts and new hopefuls - more of the latter than ever, I think! Great talks in all tracks - including the hallway one. Even some conspiracies for good, which is always fun. There were too many highlights to mention, so I'll just shout a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to making this a fantastic experience - again. On a personal note I ask/hope those of you who said hi at the conf can reach out and remind me who you are, so I can connect faces to handles on here. I suck at remembering so you'll have to forgive me for some of the bewildered looks I'm sure I gave some of you. (After that last pic I was afraid someone would arrest us - drinking that beer from paper cups must be an affront to the locals..) #EuroBSDCon2026 #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #BSD #Retrocomputing

Having an absolute blast at #EuroBSDCon as always. Loads of cool people, excellent tutorial on the #CRA and its implications for open source, very interesting #bhyve developments, a fantastic "debut" by Federico Angelilli bringing kernel live patching on #FreeBSD through his #GSOC project. As always I brought some properly obsolete hardware: a 486slc2 running #NetBSD (or OS/2 on request), a Toshiba luggable 486SX2-66 with #DOS and #MonkeyIsland, #DOTT, #Larry, #SpaceQuest or whatnot, and - surprisingly - a Pentium 3-based Gericom laptop gifted to me by @outofcreativity@exquisite.social which is now upgraded from #OpenBSD to NetBSD ;-) #EuroBSDCon2026
