IPCC is under pressure to delay publication of key global climate report "Scientists are coming under pressure from some petro-states and major developing countries to delay publication of a key global report on the climate, despite pleas from vulnerable countries worried that postponement could spell disaster for them. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the UN-convened body of the world’s leading climate scientists, is meeting this week in Addis Ababa to discuss its seventh assessment report, a comprehensive survey of all that is known about the climate crisis. The report, known as AR7, was scheduled to appear in 2028 in time for deliberations at the UN climate summit, Cop33, late that year. Cop33 is scheduled to critique governments’ actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris agreement target of limiting temperatures to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Approval of biggest coal project in NSW planning commission’s history described as ‘infamous betrayal’ "The New South Wales independent planner has approved the biggest coalmine project to ever go before it, allowing mining to continue until 2045 at a Hunter Valley project described by climate groups as a “carbon bomb”. On Wednesday, the commission said the greenhouse gas emissions from the mine, near Singleton, would “contribute to climate change impacts on the people, economy and environment of the Hunter region, NSW and globally”. The Climate Council had described the project as a “climate bomb that would supercharge climate disasters”. Sydney gardener fined almost $200,000 for removing 287 trees to improve harbourside mansion’s water views "It began with a gardener being hired to trim grass at a harbourside mansion in Sydney – and escalated to payments being left in a shoe for the unlawful felling of hundreds of native trees in protected bushland. Now a court has fined Yi Wang $187,500 for his role in organising and carrying out the destruction of 287 trees from council-owned foreshore bushland at Woodford Bay in Longueville in late 2023. The New South Wales land and environment court justice Rachel Pepper convicted Wang last week for helping to orchestrate the clearing of 1,210 sq metres of land beside a waterfront property on Lucretia Avenue. Wang pleaded guilty to three offences in relation to the unlawful clearing, which Pepper heard destroyed potential habitat for a range of protected and threatened animals, including powerful owls and microbats. It could take three decades to recover.
