Achievement unlocked: ran an emergency hot fix command on >>100k running VMs Got it done in under 4 hours with a parallelism level of 1000 concurrent command executions :D

#php2shell was fixed in #NixOS with https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/576853 Until Hydra has caught up with package builds, you can pin to the commit directly (and compile PHP locally, no big deal): nix flake lock --override-input nixpkgs github:NixOS/nixpkgs/8c259fc0dd1f3ccc1aaf4f9156ab16b7328b5a4f You can verify the PHP version is 8.4.27 afterwards.

In case you’re looking for a Nintendo 64 controller which connects via USB-C and feels good to use, I can recommend the 8bitdo 64, e.g. https://www.galaxus.ch/de/s1/product/8bitdo-64-bluetooth-controller-android-pc-switch-switch-2-gaming-controller-66904542

TIL: My https://gokrazy.org/ appliance platform was helpful in the MARLIN project, an effort by the European Space Agency to monitor responsible fishing: https://resilience.esa.int/archives/projects/marlin https://github.com/gokrazy/gokrazy/discussions/394 Very cool! 🤩 #gokrazy #golang

In case you missed it (and only saw the outrage), Tridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Tridgell) recently blogged about #rsync and the change in security vulnerability discoveries: https://medium.com/@tridge60/rsync-and-outrage-d9849599e5a0

New blog post: Tracking down a Zsh history data loss bug 🐞 For many years, I sometimes discovered that commands I was sure I had run were no longer present in my Z shell history file (~/.zsh_history). In this article, I will show you how I tracked down the bug. Spoiler: ultimately, patching Zsh to make it crash loudly and analyzing the crash’s core dump was the winning strategy! https://michael.stapelberg.ch/posts/2026-08-09-zsh-history-truncation-bug/

Pretty impressive! Fil-C allows making existing C programs memory safe (through “InvisiCaps” and a Garbage Collector, building on top of LLVM): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F-2Y1LPRek

In case anyone else finds it useful, I have gotten around to cleaning up my personal emoji picker (created after my rofimoji installation broke one too many times; so now it’s in Go which doesn’t break), so in case you’re using #i3 and are looking for an emoji picker: https://github.com/stapelberg/emoji-picker-for-i3 is the one that annoys me the least ;) I configured it in my i3 config on key binding Super+M for “M”-oji 😂 Try it out on Nix-enabled systems, like #NixOS: nix run github:stape...

oh no! having one consistent style beats “steering your formatter” for personal preference I was around when formatters became a thing, and it was always painful in C (multiple variations), but a no-brainer in Go (one style).

Amazing: #Debian is now shipping reproducible packages 💪 https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2026/05/msg00001.html Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen! See https://reproducible-builds.org/ if you are not familiar with the topic

Another day, another #Linux security vulnerability! Dirty Frag: https://github.com/V4bel/dirtyfrag For my fellow #NixOS users, here is the mitigation I applied to my systems: https://github.com/stapelberg/nix/commit/05e40d77799a8d68dc019b316cb824904a53361c

In case you were wondering: #gokrazy kernels are not vulnerable to copy.fail because they do not include the vulnerable code 🥳 In any case, 7.0.3 is available, so maybe update regardless (it’s always good to be up-to-date) :) If you are not familiar: https://gokrazy.org/ is my Go appliance platform based on the Linux kernel and a 100% Go userspace :) #Linux #golang

Great news! Apparently #Linux users soon get to enjoy more HDMI support (with AMD): https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMDGPU-HDMI-2.1-FRL-Patches

For my fellow #NixOS users: To fix https://copy.fail/ (CVE-2026-31431) on NixOS 25.11, switch your Flake input to : nixpkgs.url = "github:nixos/nixpkgs/release-25.11"; (Until the `nixos-25.11` tag is updated, too.) See also https://discourse.nixos.org/t/is-nixos-affected-by-copy-fail-edit-yes-it-is/77317/26 for copy-pasteable instructions to check / fix / verify

Yesterday at the hackerspace, a friend had forgotten the password to their (demo / showcase) computer. Luckily, the convenient new sysadmin tool “copy.fail” saved the day! With one line, we could get a root shell and set a new password 😂 Way easier than rebooting into init=/bin/bash. So convenient! 2026 is truly the year of Linux on the desktop :P

My framework desktop arrived! https://frame.work/ch/en/desktop It was a pleasure to build! Everything is clearly labeled and there are instructions. The only issue were CPU fan screws / tolerances, which seems to be a known issue. I ran out of capacity on my previous Mini PC server, so I decided to max out the specs on this one 🙈

Wow, in case you missed it: I just watched the Framework 13 Pro launch video, and their goal is to make “the MacBook Pro for Linux users”! https://youtu.be/GnOpIQJnYWU?si=TbZbKQHxiKgrOFav To which my reaction was: Shut up and take my money! :D Finally a computer built for #Linux developers / power-users 🥰

Finally found some time to turn off and on the oven fuse. I needed to turn my oven off and on again so that it could reconnect to the WiFi so that it could set its clock after the DST change (literally the only feature I want from its connectivity) Truly peak IOT

Tip: Is your coding agent stuck on Go 1.23 or Go 1.24 because of its training corpus cut-off date? Teach it about the state of the world by summarizing release notes docs like https://go.dev/doc/go1.25 into your CLAUDE.md (or similar). Verify your change worked by quizzing your agent (see screenshot): #golang

Wow the Mattermost UI is so buggy, it’s no fun to use at all. What are your favorite self-hosted chat solutions? Need good UX on browsers, android, iphone, open source. Bonus if written in Go ;)

It’s amazing that Apple ships a “Watch” app on the phone, and yet! You cannot fully configure the watch from the “Watch” app on your phone. For example, to turn off notifications about what Apple thinks of my sleep quality, I had to fumble with the watch display instead of going via the Watch app. Can’t wait until all software is fully declarative. Why are we accepting this nonsense?!

TIL: kiwix can serve wikipedia locally quite easily. For English and German wikipedia with articles and images, you need 165 GB of disk space. Now I can do all the queries I want without straining Wikipedia servers :) Nice! #nix #nixos #wikipedia

Found this Donald Duck comic from 1972: “Byte Makes Right” (or: The Computer, or: Too Intelligent a Robot) https://scrooge-mcduck.fandom.com/wiki/The_Computer The opening line is: “This Magic Brain is Scrooge’s new Superthink XL! Just slopping over with artificial intelligence, it should simplify office work pronto…” Slopping over with AI! Coincidence or ahead of its time by over 50 years?!
