#ITBands

https://markov-bases.de is back online. I think it’s time to modernise the site… last real update was around 2014, I think. Research on Markov bases was also quiet, though. But I have some info that https://gaussoids.de might soon receive a major update that is very exciting. 🤫 (and has nothing to do with php) #FAIRData #php2shell

RE: https://mathe.social/@tomkalei/117485825907188901 History: Church published the unsolvability of the Entscheidungsproblem in spring 1936. Turing learned of it after finishing his own paper, added an appendix on the equivalence with λ-definability, and published anyway (Proc. LMS 1936). This is the essay's nightmare scenario, and Turing's paper is now the better-known one. My own story: In September 2009, Herzog, Hibi and Hreinsdóttir posted "Binomial edge ideals&am...

RE: https://mastodon.online/@tomstafford/117483220443938902 Once a field is being reshaped by AI automation, people split into two groups: Those who feel worthless and those who feel like god. There seems to be a very narrow middle ground. Why is that? And of the two groups, who will hurt more once we are through this transition?

I just submitted my abstract for the #AI and the Future of #Math seminar: Title: You are right, and I apologize. Abstract: Doing research changes the researcher. In this talk I will try to document my personal story with AI. I love computers and have been an early adopter of AI with a mostly positive outlook onto the future. Recently the picture has become a lot more grim. This has two reasons. The first is that it is becoming clearer every day how we simply cannot extend the trust that we...

RE: https://mathe.social/@tomkalei/117274073192673582 Sometimes people ask why we mathematicians don’t just reject AI and keep doing what we have always done. The reason is that Theoremoids exist and people just send them to us by mail unasked. We don’t need to use AI ourselves. Amateurs can do it for us. Ignoring that the answers are out there is no option either.

Together with Bernd Sturmfels we made a new word yesterday: theoremoid We live in the times where a tired dentist instead of playing fruit ninja or scrolling insta now copies open math problems into chatgpt in the evening and gets back solutions that are probably true and have lean formalization. Does everybody understand this state of research math? Random strangers send us the solutions to our very hard problems from the past by-email every day!! The likelihood that these mails actually con...
