A lot of times I think I don't have ADHD. Then I do a brain dump, looked at what I wrote, and realized that my thoughts are utterly chaotic. I am literally overflowing with 1001 ideas that I would probably never execute because I want to do all of them at once. And on top of that, I'm holding the tasks of multiple projects in my head 💩 I have to often voice record my brain dump because my brain moves so fast that my hands cannot write fast enough. If I don't write my thoughts down i...

What a delightful yet heartbreaking movie. Although the middle eastern country is not named and fictional, I would say it's mirrored on the Iraq war. Rather than take the easy way out by demonising the Americans, this movie shows the reality of how war affects everyone, including the invading army. For eg besides showing the awfulness of the US army, they also show the awfulness of the resistance, even showing how children were trained to be suicide bombers. During a time such as this...

I instantly am on defence mode when a non-Chinese write about China and or her culture. Logically I understand most people are just awakening to something that I’ve lived with for most of my life: That Chinese culture and history is pretty deep and rich. So they’re just expressing it through essays, social media posts, videos … However, I’ve just been bitten too many times, have read too many terrible hot takes that are usually shades of “China is bad” or “why can’t they be like us?” Or worse,...

I wrote a novel last year using the help of AI. Frustrated by the lack of novels that suited my taste (the publishing industry really publishes an extremely narrow range of books these days), I decided to just write a novel using AI. I've had an idea for a story for the longest time but I doubted anyone would ever write it (at least in English). So, I asked AI to co-write it with me. In my case, it was good that AI wrote the copy because it felt like I was really reading a novel writt...

Unexpectedly found myself enjoying Rising Justice 蒸蒸日上 on iqiyi. A down and out lawyer opens a firm to fight for justice for the ordinary man. Meanwhile, her childhood friend starts on the path of being a ruthless corporate lawyer. The two ends up being enemies... It's actually quite funny! Tho I have to say we've seen this setup a few times before, I have hopes this could be a good watch. #Cdrama #China #entertainment #tv

Against the Current ends its run. What a gorgeous Cdrama. It has given a boost to the actor, Liu Xueyi, whom many recognize as a good actor who doesn't “play traffic games” to succeed. The drama’s success also sends hope to those who have been wishing for the data and traffic-driven idol drama model to die. (Liu Xueyi and Tan Songyun are not traffic actors.) And it may seem that there are signs that Chinese audiences are tired of Cdramas with weak scripts and actors who are chosen purely...

My article reaching number one on Hacker News, my CEO writing about me on LinkedIn.... this has been an interesting year for me, career-wise. ;) It feels very validating because eight years ago, I left an established career in journalism to throw myself into the jaws of corporate, somehow believing that despite my untechy background, I could hack it in the tech industry. I'm glad I took the plunge, even though it was effing scary. #tech #career https://lnkd.in/p/gvCnhxfz https://ln...

My huge review of Against the Current. Huge because I wrote a lot and also because I am doing something a little controversial: Tackling a well-known CDrama reviewer's criticisms about the drama. :P #CDrama #AgainsttheCurrent #China #TV #Entertainment #LiuXueyi #TanSongyun https://dramatea88.wordpress.com/2026/10/14/against-the-current-review/

Now that Liu Xueyi has levelled up and has genuinely "blown up" in China, that means he would choose more serious roles from now on. Actors often start out in idol dramas (they are the training wheels), and then around their 30s are expected to transition to more serious roles in Cdramas that most international folks don't bother watching 😆. (It is usually very difficult to transition to more serious roles, and very few actors have done this successfully. Many return to...

I feel an immense amount of satisfaction as I end the working week because I solved a problem that had been plaguing me for three quarters. I had planned my company's content pipeline with a spreadsheet. Yes, it is as awful as it sounds. It was a nightmare to update and maintain, and I was over it. This week I worked with Claude Code and I came up with an app that would help me plan my editorial calendar and produce reports at the end of the quarter. I created the app in … 3 days. This...

PS: I find Claude an immensely awful writer who is in love with the amount of verbiage it produces. The more words it produces the more smug it will sound 🫠 And no I don't use it to write. The amount of editing and revising I would do would kill me. But lordie the answer it gives me! Anyway I'd probably update my claude.md to tell it speak to me like a super busy CEO with only five min for it 🤣 #Claude #AI

I love that Game Science is bringing Chinese myths and legends to life and introducing it to gamers around the world. Zhong Kui is the Underworld's bounty hunter who "quells demons and spirits". (He has this girnonmous sword that helps him do just that). Oh yea the Chinese version of hell is more like the underworld. All deceased people go there and pay their karmic debts. https://youtu.be/sqe3j4Qch1Y?si=3CgXhozAP7xvq2Fu #Chinese #culture #gaming

This is going to be the hill I die on: a small number of social media followers is better than a large number of social media followers. This is especially true if your small number of followers know you or have met up with you in real life. This has been my experience over the last few decades of my life. I feel that social media is just better if it's small-scale rather than big. When your community becomes too big, you hardly know them, and they probably don't even have much of a co...

The most annoying thing about the very loud, US-centric discourse around AI is that it is exported to my part of the world. Most people from Asia are rather nonchalant about AI. Sure, we have worries about AI replacing our jobs, but we don't go being dramatic about it online. You hardly ever see people going on long tirades about how AI will destroy the world. Also, virtue signaling is pretty much not a common thing on my side of the world. People usually frown on it, and many people consi...

#Substack has now enabled tools to "detect AI writing". Need I remind everyone that ESL students will get disproportionately flagged by these wonderful AI detection tools? Not to mention that AI detection tools are mostly shite to begin with? (If I write more formally, I'm almost flagged as AI.) What are they trying to do, encourage witch hunts? Instill a sense of superiority in native English speakers? Make folks with writing/learning disabilities feel small for using AI to comm...

On the matter of Greek erasure in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Nolan's Odyssey isn't just a movie—it's the latest act in a 200-year-old tradition of appropriating Greek culture while denying that Greeks should have control of their own heritage. http://elizabethtai.com/2026/07/21/on-the-matter-of-greek-erasure-in-christopher-nolans-the-odyssey/ #links #blogging #odyssey2026 #odyssey #homer #greece #linkblogging

Rewatching this and realise that it's not I lost my love for Kdramas, but just that Kdramas have morphed into a shape that I no longer love as much. I've tried in vain to find the quirky, melo #Kdrama romances that I used to love in the current roster, but I just don't find it anymore - that unique flavour, the essence that made it uniquely Kdrama. Not sure what changed, but it definitely started when foreign streaming platforms started producing them. I suspect that they're in...

I've always wanted flowers at my back balcony, but it's so shaded few flowering plants would bloom or thrive there. One day, I took a walk around my neighborhood and discovered purple flowers blooming under a heavy shade. And that's when I knew this is the plant I need. They bring delight to me every day. Another way China is doing AI differently. I am not surprised this happened, by the way. In China, the people's voice is actually heard and acted on. If you understand the way their politics work and the way their government is structured, it will not surprise you at all. Unfortunately, most Westerners do not understand or think that there are other ways to govern society beyond democracy. They think that non-democratic countries are basically autocratic, but they do not understand th...

Malaysians receive fuel subsidies. Without it, our petrol would be 2x more due to the #iranwar #oilcrisis . I paid RM35 for 17.5l of oil which is roughly about US$9. Because I designed life in such a way that most of my needs are a walk away, which includes clinics, supermarkets and the light rail, I use the car to drive short distances (around 6km or less) a few times a week. I also drive a fuel efficient car. The last time I pumped petrol was on March 25 and I still had a 1/4 tank left on May...
