Dr. Kevin P. Taylor

ktaylor@sciences.social

<p>I am a professor working to understand and help early-stage founders succeed while avoiding or mitigating negative impacts of <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/entrepreneurship" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>entrepreneurship</span></a>.</p><p>My research interests include wellbeing, emotion, creativity, impression management, and motives and I explore these mainly using computational and experimental methods (with <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/rstats" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>rstats</span></a>). In a previous career, I built software and startups, and these experiences inform my research questions. </p><p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Academia</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tag

Software developers from the 2000&amp;#39;s, who knew python and javascript would win in the end?

@girlonthenet My optometrist doesn&amp;#39;t have to do the blurry eye drops anymore. She has a machine that can do that diagnostic without the eye drops.

@dawnnafus There are some good books out there on managing teams and individuals. Not sure if that’s what you’re struggling with but could give some recommendations if so.

@ashwinvis I use Zotero for both citation management and note taking on papers. Keeps the PDFs and notes all together in one software. I also use Google Sheets to create literature matrices with onerow per paper and columns for various attributes of the papers, eg sample, method, etc. I have one of these matrices per lit review I work on.

@matthewskelton Folks who follow DHH’s advice on this deserve the infrastructure hell they get. Talk to anyone over 40 who has had to manage a server farm to find out the truth.

@chanakya @matthewskelton Sure, I agree the established firms can afford to repatriate but there are legitimate reasons even Fortune 500 firms went to the cloud. Number one reason is it is hard to find and keep the necessary talent. A failed migration, botched backup, or successful DDoS attack can wreck havoc. At least I’ll be sleeping fine at night lol.

@beatnikprof I read recently about a professor in the 1800s complaining about his students and their lack of effort and ability compared to the good old days.

@BenjaminHCCarr If one publishes a paper with co-authors, it seems one should only receive a portion of a citation versus publishing a sole authored paper. Otherwise PIs publishing with lots of their grad students get citation counts that are essentially meaningless compared to anyone not running their own big lab.

  • View post

@BenjaminHCCarr Or maybe we have to look at citation counts for a lab as its own metric to not conflate individual productivity versus lab productivity.

@rolkra Interesting package — I plan to test drive it in the next few days.

@futurebird What do you mean by you taught them to use a calculator? Like how to use the functions or how to use it to check their work or ? Asking because I would like to help students get better/more confident with math also.

I just upgraded to the unlimited storage plan for @zotero. I didn&amp;#39;t hesitate. Zotero is the most important tool in my scholarly work -- I put it even above #rstats, which I use extensively.
