<p>I have been working with Web technologies since 1992. I have co-founded two browser companies, Opera Software and Vivaldi Technologies. I was CEO at Opera and I am CEO at Vivaldi.</p><p>I am a strong proponent of open standards. I believe in building feature rich products that can be adapted to the needs of users without collecting information about usage. I believe no company has the right to profile their users.</p>

Seeing a lot more messages like this. Sometimes multiple times on the same site during the same session. Also seeing more geo blocking of sites. The principle of the Web is in many ways global access, but that is eroding in some ways. AI is not helping there with harvesting of data. Too many bots. #AI #Web #Vivaldi #BigTech @w3c

If you would like to increase the cost of energy, oil, gas and electricity, what would you do? It is really all a game of supply and demand. 1. Reduce production of electricity. Stop wind, solar, hydro through bans, tarifs and reduction of incentives. 2. Create bottlenecks in the distribution of energy. 3. Create uncertainty in the energy markets. 4. Reduce incentives for EVs. IMHO we need to do the opposite. We need to invest in wind, solar, hydro and various new technologies and we need to...

This year the @Vivaldi team visited Siglufjörður as part of our yearly visit to Iceland. Parts of the team live in Iceland, but other members of the team live in Norway and around Europe. It is great to spend quality time together. I feel lucky to work with such a dedicated team, who have common, shared values. We have a lot of cool stuff coming up, which I look forward to sharing with you! #Vivaldi #Browser #Europa #EU #Iceland

For a long time we have made our selves gradually more and more dependent on Big Tech. This applies when it comes to operating system, to browsers, to various services, to storage and now when it comes to AI. More and more are realizing this was and is wrong. You can take the first steps to be independent as a person or company. Obviously, given that you are here, you have already taken some steps. Here are some suggestions: 1. Switch browser... to Vivaldi. :) 2. Switch desktop OS. Persona...

More and more sites are having to set up defenses from AI bots. It is costly to provide online services and they were not built for bots. One can say that the AI companies are performing a global denial of service attack, which incurs costs to all of their competitors, as well as the rest of the Internet, while their own services can afford to withstand that load. The service owners are forced to perform costly operations to defend them selves, but also make the services worse for the users....

I am not a fan of gambling. Never have been. Personally I think most all gambling should be banned. Maybe with some limited exceptions. What I am more than disgusted by is the so called prediction markets. That looks like the worst kind of gambling and marketed as just stats. TV channels, such as CNN, include gambling results from these companies as something equal to polling. Hidden marketing is a more accurate term. There is also a lot of examples of people gambling on things they know the...

There are clearly many reasons why people are switching to Vivaldi. Interestingly, my little survey shows that the top reasons have more to do with our values than particular features. The #1 reason (77%) is the fact that we do not have built in AI. #2 is that we do not build profiles on our users (67%). #3 is that we are made in Europe. #4 and #5 is that we do not build in Crypto currencies and the built in ad and tracker blocker. We will continue to listen to our users. We have chosen a diff...

More and more people are joining Vivaldi and there are many different reasons why. Which of these are important to you? I am allowing multiple choices as I know for many of you it is not about one thing. Some of this is thing that we do, but I know for may it is also about things we do not do, such as including AI or Crypto currencies. #Vivaldi #Browser #EU #Europa #Technology #AI #Politics #Windows #Macos #Linux #Mastodon #Fediverse

The correct thing for Big Tech is to follow the rules instead of getting the Trump administration involved. Big Tech is now very much part of the problem. Is it time to vote with your feet and choose alternatives to Big Tech? I would think so. #BigTech #Regulation #Politics #Technology #Google #Microsoft #Apple #Meta https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/24/trump-tariffs-eu-trade-google-apple-tech.html?utm_source=flipboard&utm_medium=activitypub

There are many reasons why people move to @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net. Jack Wallen tells you why he switched in this article on ZDNET. The point is really that you can make Vivaldi be what you want it to be. We respect that people have different opinions on how the browser should look and feel and thus we provide the flexibility for you to get it your way. You can have a rich UI or you can hide it. No other browser has the level of functionality that we offer, but similarly you can make Vivaldi...

More and more are realizing that it was a really bad idea to entrust all data to Big Tech. Given that, what do you do now? For many it just means moving to a different hosting service, that is not Big Tech. For others it means hosting yourself. Likely there will be a bit of a combination for many. In any case, this means the need to build up competence in the organization, which IMHO is a good thing. In my old company, Opera, and in my new one @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net, we always run things...

It is time for the #BBC and #NPR to set up shop on #Mastodon. Same applies to all other serious news institutions. They should set up their own servers. They have the means to do so and it just makes sense. #Twitter

More and more of us are noticing it. The level of interaction on #Mastodon is a lot larger than that of #Twitter and #Facebook There are many good reasons: 1. On Mastodon you are more likely to see what those you follow post, as there are no algorithms in the way. 2. If you do not have a blue tick on Twitter, you are basically blocked. 3. On Facebook algorithms get in the way as well. This is the reason why I believe we must all embrace #Mastodon and the #fediverse .

We are getting more and more questions about using Vivaldi inside larger organizations. There is an understanding that relying on Big Tech is a bad idea and Vivaldi has a lot of unique features, but also avoids adding certain functionality that is unwanted both by users and organizations. There is no AI built into Vivaldi, no profiling of users and no Crypto currencies. We are adding functionality for managed deployment and updates, as well as policy management. If you are interested, conta...

A lot of people are moving away from Big Tech. Many more would like to do so, but they do not know that it is really easy to do so and that there are good options. You do, given that you are here. Maybe time to help your friends? Some good options, that I use myself : OS : Linux. Browser : Vivaldi. Mail client : Vivaldi. Calendar client : Vivaldi. Mail Service : Proton, FastMail. Social : Mastodon & Fediverse in general. Office package : Libre Office. Video conference : Whereby. Feel...

In January 2022 I wrote this article on Crypto. The point was to explain why we have taken a stand against it. For me that stand was really taken 10 years earlier, as friends wanted me to become involved. At the time I read what I could find and concluded that this was all a scam. My opinion has not changed. Over the years it has become clearer for most that it is a scam that not only increases risk for the economy as a whole, increases global warming and electricity prices, it is even being use...

During my survey of whether LLMs were right when they say that Microsoft has changed and is no longer an Evil Empire, 1% said they had changed and a few attacked my survey. The survey was really about asking people in the know, because I believe there are more knowledgeable people here about things Tech, then in most other places. Anyways, for those of you that think the Microsoft has changed, how do you defend this? - Windows Recall. - Setting Edge as default when updating Windows. - Edge...

My survey showed that 99% of you do not agree with the LLMs when they say that Microsoft has changed their ways and are no longer an Evil Empire. The question is also then how the LLMs all come up with a very similar, but wrong text? LLMs are not intelligent. They just repeat the prevailing Truth and this means they can easily be manipulated in the same way SEO is used to manipulate search rankings. Anyone looking at search results knows how badly that is working and the risk is that the all kn...

Part of the issue with AI is how it can be used to rewrite history or get a version of the truth that is not entirely truthful. I asked 3 LLMs why Microsoft is called the evil empire. This is the last paragraph of their answers: Claude : "It's worth noting the company has changed substantially under Satya Nadella, who took over in 2014. Microsoft became one of the largest contributors to open source, acquired GitHub, built strong developer goodwill, and largely shed the "evil emp...

At Opera we built, IMHO, the best browser engine, Presto. It was built from scratch. It aced all the tests. It was lean and fast and could run on just about any hardware. It could even run on hardware where there was not enough memory to keep a full web page in memory, which is how it was able to run on things like mobile phones, game consoles, such as the Nintendo DS and Wii, and TVs. We even made it run effectively on servers, which is how we made Opera Mini. We did that with a relatively smal...

My first company, Opera, was built on word of mouth. The same applies to my 2nd company, @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net. We have never had the means that Big Tech has. In the case of Vivaldi, we have even avoided investors, to not end up like Opera. We have also made it harder for our selves. We likely could have generated more funds through adding stuff like Crypto, AI or just plain old data collection in the browser, but we choose not to. We are also not an Ad company like most of our larger co...

In April 1994 I started working on the Opera browser with Geir Iversøy, my co-founder. I worked at Opera for 17 years, leaving it after disagreeing with investors about the way forward. Two years later I co-founded @Vivaldi with Tatsuki Tomita and Anne Stavnes. This was in 2013. For more than 30 years we have provided alternatives to Big Tech. First with Opera and now with Vivaldi. The focus has always been quite different from our competitors. More features, more privacy, more flexibility. La...

I have finally moved over to Linux as my primary platform. In many ways it is like coming home, as I loved working on UNIX machines in the past. Of course, I have been using Linux as a secondary OS for a long time, but I finally made the switch. Microsoft cancelling Windows 10 and the direction Windows 11 is going was just too much for me. @ruario helped the transition, by making it easy for me to work with multiple concurrent @Vivaldi installs. That is a must for me as I test a lot of builds a...
