I dunno. I got the new interface and like…it’s aggressively meh? Nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Y’all are starting to sound like late-10s Facebook grandmas. “But it looks like vibe code!” Yeah, and in the 90s everything looked like Windows, and in the early-00s everything was skeuomorphic, and in the mid-10s everything was flat design. This is an unfortunate design trend, but they’re all unfortunate. “But rounded corners!” …so? I mean, honestly, I can’t think of a single logical object...

Well, I mean, he is wearing those purple shorts. Maybe they’re… battery shorts.

The gamma does turn him green. Maybe that’s not just stylistic, maybe he’s photosynthesizing.

I absolutely love the Sherlock & Co. podcast, the conceit of which is that Watson is a podcaster who records the adventures of Sherlock and releases them as a podcast. He’s apparently always recording everything, at every moment, on a little portable recorder that’s small enough to pass essentially unnoticed in almost any situation–and yet there’s been only one time that I can remember in which this recorder has failed, and it has never run out of battery power, including when the investigat...

Yeah, I think it’s a fair characterization, I just wanted to clarify that it is indeed based on Unix. To my knowledge I’ve never used BSD. I didn’t move away from Windows until I, like you say, just didn’t have the bandwidth to do more than one experimental thing with my computer. Windows pushed me out a few years back, and I went with Linux because of the breadth of support. I’ve got tons of time to do research, though. By which I mean read random Wikipedia articles in the bathroom, TBH. I...

So, there are a couple of things. Here is where I push up my glasses and say “well–ahem–” First, true, BSD is not itself Unix. That specific OS (which began with the PDP-7 Operating System in the late 1960s) really only existed until the late 80s or early 90s, when Bell Labs stopped working on it. However, it is literally Unix-based. The first version of BSD was forked (as we’d call it today) from the Research Unix source code at UC Berkeley. Since then, the various BSD derivatives and distr...

The argument I’ve always heard isn’t that it helps them with their work, but that it helps them with the rest of their life. Since so much of their work has to be done during the day, having more time at night to go to the store and such could potentially be nice. It’s still dumb, but it’s slightly less dumb.

Ooof. Yeah, I’ve met other parents like that. “so dangerous and full of immigrants” definitely paints a picture, for sure. There are folks all over the place who feel, despite evidence to the contrary, like the world is so much more dangerous than it used to be. I think that those two things have to go together–the whole “Fox News makes people afraid of immigrants for fun and profit” thing, though I have also met some left-of-center people in that same boat, so who knows.

It suggests that it would. It is suggesting that the quality of the models’ ability to correctly understand a fast food order indicates its fitness to be used in teaching, but I would say that even a model which can flawlessly take a cheeseburger order—even a model which can flawlessly mimic the action of teaching—wouldn’t be appropriate for the task. The quality of its output is unrelated to its fitness to the purpose.

Old battery works in new chassis, but new battery doesn’t work in old chassis.

Not anymore. Most corporate environments I’ve been in use Office on the web or Google Docs.

There are still a lot of Chromebooks kicking around, too. And those are technically Linux.

If it's altering snapshots, it's not a reliable archive. Simple as that.
