One of the most important things I've learnt in my career is the ability to say, "I don't know." It's not a weakness. it's a strength. Leadership and/or management were reaching out for your expert understanding, and right now, you don't have a viewpoint. That is OK. It can help prevent decisions being made in haste or out of FOMO. Stop, slow down a bit, gain some insight, and then proceed with real insight. (this applies pre and post...

For years I've had an issue where when I lock my screen and it fades to black on the lockscreen to save power...a good thing. It would wake up ~7s later. This was a constant loop, so I had to turn off my monitors if I was deliberately leaving the computer running something. Today I found out it was because one of my monitors was set to auto for its input. When it had no input it was asking over DisplayPort and HDMI "are you there?". PSA: set your monitor input to a d...

UK, remember you are protected by Consumer Rights Act 2015. I particularly want to point out "Service to be performed with reasonable care and skill". Example, if you are having solar panels installed you have an expectation of reasonable professionalism and care. And if your roof tiles if broken by them, then they should take the accountability and responsibility for the repair. #UK #consumerlaw

I may be alone with this view, but I think it is useful as software engineers to understand our impact on society. Our job is to systemise processes, to reduce unnecessary toil, and as a result, improved society somehow. The problem is that the first two bits are often done while ignoring the last part. Processes are often encoded to be inflexible, no longer adaptable or resiliant, and removing interfaces that previously worked. And, automation results in job losses. #SoftwareEngineering

Software bug that I've seen in the wild. I'm so glad it's non critical. Driving along and the car tells you the speed limit for where you are driving. I (not being a driver) assumed it was GPS and map data that made this system work. But no, it's a camera and optical character recognition. It just reads street signs. So the bug was, while in the woods, there are carved and painted speed limit signs for the dirt path, 10mph. The error, it often interpreted it as...
