A fun fact that I am now just learning is that Australia’s capital city may in fact be named after the Ngunnawal word for boobs or cleavage.

RE: https://lgbtqia.space/@alice/117550251469985517 [looks at the stock market] I mean, the problem of “LLMs will run as long as someone pays the electric bill for them” might go away soon if we’re lucky

RE: https://cloudisland.nz/@daisy/117085710529199848 Oh wow I only posted this two months ago, but I guess weeks are measured in decades these days. Anyway, bringing this back given that Wall Street is getting jittery about AI again.

Today's macOS 27 bug is that when I tried to connect to my Magic Trackpad via Bluetooth, I got kicked back to the login window, and then when I logged in all of my apps had quit and were restarting. (I've no idea if the bluetooth thing was the cause of the bug or just a coincidence.) Incredible operating system, no notes.

Reading AI believers’ reactions to the Jepsen/ParticleDB thing is wild. Someone else said the phrase “AI can never fail, it can only be failed” and holy shit it’s so true of these people’s belief systems. Like there’s so much of people commenting that they probably weren’t doing this or that particular One Weird Trick that is supposed to make agentic coding actually good, and then someone else commenting that they did in fact do that and it didn’t help. You see it in the day to day of AI coder...

Apparently now in Siri in macOS 27 (which has replaced Spotlight as the thing you get on ⌘Space), when you type a mathematical expression, you get an incorrect result in large text at the top, and then the correct result in smaller text underneath. Awesome.

RE: https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/117532486075073106 Okay so in the space of 24 hours we’ve learned that Anthropic has just snuck a RAT into a bunch of developers’ laptops across the industry AND the FT have reported that they might get a junk credit rating. (I am not a FT subscriber so am going off the title/lede here to be fair.) Extremely normal weekend.

RE: https://social.joelle.us/@joelle/117527423586381628 For PyCon AU 2023, we paid a non-trivial amount extra (I can’t disclose how much) to have a ramp on our main stage, as compared to the standard setup that was steps only. We didn’t have specific speakers that we knew about that absolutely needed that ramp, but it means that I can say with confidence that nobody looked at a stage with stairs and felt like they didn’t belong on that stage, and it also means that nobody had that particular b...

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/117501317286872418 This was how I learned that apparently finance people have been calling the big AI companies the “Magnificent Seven” like it’s a fucking Enid Blyton book or something

Woolworths Online have "improved" the search function, by making it so that it automatically turns part of your search query into filters, and also making it so that the last few characters of your search query disappear for no apparent reason so for example, if you type "gluten free frozen", you are taken to a search results page where the "Gluten Free" filter is applied and the search query is just "froz"

The Stack Overflow Developer Survey results are out, and from the raw data we can find out how sentiment towards AI developer tools differs by gender. Male: 64.1% favourable, 20.0% unfavourable, n=12,278 Female: 50.5% favourable, 29.7% unfavourable, n=829 Non-binary: 36.6% favourable, 46.6% unfavourable, n=191 (Totals do not add to 100 because of neutral/undecided responses)

Just overheard two HVAC techs talking about AI in an office building food court. Highlights include: “It’s gonna be a lot of extra work to fix if we’re not absolutely sure this is right” “And like, my AI is telling me something different to [other person]’s AI” “You know why it’s like that? It’s because they want you to keep using it more”

Can we have a moratorium on transport services called The Spirit Of The Place That It Goes? There’s obviously the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, but what used to be the diesel Tilt Train from Brisbane to Cairns is now the Spirit of Queensland, and one of SeaLink’s two ferries is the Spirit of Kangaroo Island, like it’s been done, come up with something else

I am at the town market in Penneshaw, on Kangaroo Island in regional South Australia, and it’s a very small market that nonetheless hits every stereotype of the sorts of stalls you get at a country town market, good and bad. We’ve got: • hippie-looking shawls and other related bits and bobs • shockingly good French patisserie run out of the back of a Ford Transit • freshly baked bread • someone who’s bought one of those heat presses and started a “business” of printing AI slop onto ceramic mugs...

Conferences: we have set the CFP to close at the end of day Anywhere on Earth (AoE) so that submitters don’t have to do timezone math! Me: hmmmmmm okay so I’m UTC+10 and AoE means UTC-12, 10+12 is 22, so that means I can keep putting it off until 10pm the following day

The first time I visited #Brisbane was 2014 or 2015, when Central Station still had CRT screens for their PIDs. When I went back this year they had been replaced with flatscreens, but one thing has remained true: a visitor’s very first impression of Central as they step off the airport train is that the Airport–Gold Coast line PIDs use the exact same yellow-green-brown colour as a newborn baby’s first-ever poo.
