Wish me luck? My second try at sous vide since the chicken breast was amazing. Now I have 2 chuck roasts going for about 32 hours at 140°. Chain mail cast iron pan scrubbers are weighing them down. The silicone mats are giving a bit extra insulation. The quaint print on the wall? My grandma’s calendar print I framed and always have in my kitchen in memory of her. #Roast #Cooking #SousVide #Meat #SundayDinner

For those wondering how our 36 hour sous vide of chuck roasts went Photos of food It worked great! Like I hoped the thinner one cooked to medium while the thicker cooked to medium rare. My son really liked his roast rare like the first photo—it comes out juicy and tender almost like a steak. #SousVide #Roast #SundayDinner #Food #Meat

Yesterday my son had a dental appointment from 1 pm to 4 pm. What? How can it last so long and what on earth was done? He was at the dental college in the special needs clinic with 4 students and 4 faculty/staff all looking at every single part of his mouth and so many questions they asked. He was treated like royalty and has the best care. Got his teeth cleaned. New x-rays, and a plan to come back in December for one filling. Woot! Meanwhile as usual I got to take a break 20 minutes to walk...

To all my friends here in Mastodon/Fediverse a few days of a new avatar. Don’t worry, my steady Resist avatar will be back soon. I got my hair cut 4” today! Omigosh, shortest hair now since about 2018. It actually feels better. Anyhoo, this photo avatar will be available in case any bot accounts would like to check my gender before automatically sending “sexy” follow requests. Man, I sure get a lot of these—thank goodness I enabled Follow Request for my TL. Are most people getting the “sexy” f...

So pleased to struggle getting up at 5:30 am BUT I was able to get a cup of good coffee, saved from rich coffee made yesterday and from a large Thermos. I just reheat on 5(half power) in microwave for 2 1/2 minutes, add a pinch of salt(thanks @amiserabilist) and a bit of raw sugar. A favorite mug and favorite holder for raw sugar to keep it dry. #GoodMorning #Today #Coffee #iPhone #Snapseed #Monochrome #MyPhoto

Why am I awake at 1:37 am? Oh yes, the predicted t-storms coming around 2 am. What a lot of rain since yesterday afternoon! And more through Tuesday. Nice to say the endless heat wave has broken and “Hiyah, there, El Niño!” #Weather #Rain #Phoenix #Arizona #Radar

1 in 4 and worse Oh this is just peachy. I guess we know why some Republican senators and congressmen pushed so hard for the Big Beautiful Bill. Also related, my announced health insurance changes have hit an unsustainable level in the amount of deductible before insurance pays out. Nearly TWICE. And also the cost of my prescriptions has also hit a wall. This is what was predicted to happen WITH the biggest hits coming for 2027 from the 2025 Big Beautiful Bill. Hope other voting Americans con...

This weekend I got a perky robot call from Optum, a third-party authorization firm paid by my insurance BCBS. Cheerful message “good news, we have approved your prescription.” I got a cheerful text from the pharmaceutical vendor “good news, your insurance approved your prescription, click here to order!” On my click I see (below screenshot). I did nothing. An hour ago I got a call from a Sweet Young Thing ™ “Good news! Your insurance has approved your prescription! How will you like to set up y...

If anyone remembers that yesterday I posted about the incredible medical economic disasters awaiting much of the US population to go into effect January 1, 2027, well here’s a look at almost 1/4 of the people who will lose Medicaid and Medicare coverage completely this next year. The economic devastation is way beyond that for an individual. The numbers of hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and ER’s that will close as a result will be a resulting devastation to the whole US economy as well as s...

Working working working today with our teen helper. Sorting out what I hope is 8 boxes of goods to drive to donation today. And meantime, 3 good things: 1. So glad 2 years ago I started using a stovetop percolator! About 4 times a week, no matter how bad or difficult things can be, I sure enjoy my fresh, rich coffee. 2. Drew got his leg splint off! He’s gotten his broken bone grown back in place fine. Just very weak and we must baby it a while. 3. Did I mention I’m going through a lot of cl...

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/117338205578970549 Paul started this off about 5 hours ago. He’s totally on a roll. When we all thought he was done with the thread he came roaring back with parts labeled A/. This is a DO NOT MISS thread, well thought out for the mechanics of how “things happen”. I will always think of Paul when I hear “Could. Not necessarily “should” or “will,” but could.” Thanks for sharing this thread, Paul.

Yippee skippy! 3 good things so far today. 1. Caregiver AND teen helper coming today for the afternoon. 2. I fit into my size 14 jeans today, again! I was stuck like a blimp for 2 years due to no exercise per surgery, etc. 3. A pretty rock always cheers me up. Found a photo I took 2 1/2 years ago at the Tucson Gem & Mineral show. This is Cuprosklodowskite. @3goodthings@fedigroups.social #Mineral #Crystals #Caregivers #3goodthings

Wow this is a great development after the public here in the Phoenix area has been fighting back against a behemoth ICE detention center in nearby Surprise Arizona. It’s to handle up to 10,000 prisoners and the purchase of the warehouses was made secretly. This is just the estimates of water use estimated for only 1,500 prisoners! If the public is able to get documentation on water and other public utility use, it is one way We The People can fight back. #Water #WaterUse #WaterResources #Publi...

If anyone wonders I am quiet because I’ve had to maintain calm as these last few weeks the husband of a dear friend has died while in hospice at home. And. One of my two best friends is currently in hospice and not expected to live much longer. Just waiting to hear what is inevitable is very sobering. In the meantime sure would be nice if this insane heat would give us a break and I could break a long spell of daily migraine. Meanwhile I do appreciate hearing what’s going on in friend’s live...

When I don’t necessarily have much to say because the world becomes a bit much, I post anothe #TipOfDay Here is a tiny but pleasing improvement to ceramic-coated skillets that have brown stains over time. I felt like I tried “everything” over the last few years. (I really hoped the baking soda paste would work, but nope. Then I tried BKF paste but nope. But now, ta-da! THIS. 30% white vinegar boiled at a simmer 1:1 with water. 15 minutes. And yes I used a lid because, ewwww—fumes. At first I...

Well darn. After about 20 years of avoiding any purchase from Whole Foods, I actually just bought 4 things. I had always suspected this company of odd management and food the mix of products and pricing to be far higher than typical. I didn’t buy in to claims of pure wholesome and sometimes organic food. The marketing, prices, and almost cult following put me off. #WholeFoods FYI: this is a long read and a linked article. My gut instincts AND this recent analysis in the article meshed. Then ye...

Oooh lookee here! I joined a new server and community only for photos. Recommended by @FediTips@social.growyourown.services today. It’s supposed to federate with ActivityPub and play well with Instances using it. So here is a link to a well-known photo I shot back in 2007. And you’ll also have my account address by clicking into it. I’m cobalt there, no surprise! It’s not an account or place for conversation like most social media. But looks good for photography content only. Hope it works out!...

How about another #TipOfDay? I share these ideas in particular at times I’d just rather be distracted from “unpleasantness” and downright abject horror at something I read has gone on. Happens too much, sometimes daily in the US. Sigh. But hey! Here’s a good one now—cast iron! #CastIron #Cleaning #Cooking After so many years of reading that some people use a chain mail-type mesh of stainless steel to clean a cast iron skillet, I finally got one. Works a treat! I heat a pan on the lowest settin...

If only… My Fourth of July is not a celebration but an annual reckoning from someone who is and was a privileged American. I grew up understanding the Declaration of Independence as the author of today’s Guardian editorial ascribes to the view by Abraham Lincoln. Very perceptive to read this essay headlined today from OUTSIDE the US. As if inside the US today, such an essay would be tamed down, censored and page 3 or 5 in a newspaper/news site. But then my Dad was a teacher of America histo...
