About time I added a bio. There's a bunch I could write but let's just go with "Old man yelling at clouds." That works both metaphorically and literally. I'm an infrastructure geek by trade.

Header photo is a view over the Charles River from the Longfellow Bridge, looking north toward the Museum of Science with the Zakim Bridge in the background.

Pronouns: he/him but no strong preference. Use what's comfortable for you

I recently learned that the bots that send out political text messages understand the response "go fuck yourself". I don't generally reply to spam but this one annoyed me more than usual and I'm rather peeved that politicians have exempted themselves from do not call/text lists. #USPol

Raise your hand if you've ever overridden the production environment configuration and taken everything down. 🤚 Thank $deity I'm good about backups and that everything came back intact once I restored the config. #DevOps

One of those days where it was nice to be able to get out of the house and hit one of my locals this evening. Saw some folks I know, had a beer and some very tasty chili. Life is good. (even if I did take down the production environment today, strictly a first world problem) Hope you folks are having as least as good an end to your day. I say this a lot because I think it's important, keep looking out for each other. It's how we get to a better place. #Cambridge #NewRepublik

Had someone really disappoint me today. Not a big deal, just bummed me out a bit. But to be totally frank, all my problems are first world problems and I have nothing to complain about. Wrapped up the day at one of our locals with my SO. Warm space, fantastic food, awesome crew and wonderful musicians. Life is awesome. I hope you folks had as good an end to your day. Stay strong. Keep looking out for each other. We'll get there. #Cambridge #TheDruid

Someone I know made a pocket amp for distraction-free guitar or bass practice with your favorite pedals. I don't know much about Guitars but I know this person's electrical engineering skills and trust this is a solid device designed to last. If you play Guitar or Bass, consider taking a look. https://www.crowdsupply.com/neighborhood-circuits/porter I'm sure they would appreciate the boosts too. Thanks. #Guitar #GuitarGear #Bass

As if I needed another reason not to shop at Whole Foods ever since they've been enshittified by Amazon. I don't buy much on Amazon but it's tough to avoid them. I went into my account today to check order history for info on something I bought two years ago. The detail of every Whole Foods purchase I have made was there. I don't have prime so it must be tied to my credit card. I guess I have to go back to carrying cash now. What a shitty timeline we live in. #...

I've been playing with resources to generate slippy map tiles from Open Street Map data. It's been working well. Now I'd like to do something similar for aviation sectional charts. Does anyone have a good resource for generating Slippy Map/ Meta Tile files for aviation sectional charts? I'm mostly interested in the U.S., but other regions of the world would be useful as well. Also, this isn't my area of expertise so recommendations for hashtags and/or...

Just a thought, but if your alt text only contains the word "screenshot", you're doing it wrong.

It appears ICE is unhappy with people knowing that Jonathan Ross has been identified as the ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Good. They tried to bully an election worker for sharing Jonathan Ross's name. Again, that name was Jonathan Ross. Look, I get it. You're fascists and therefore bullies. It shouldn't be too tough for you to figure out who I really am. Feel free to drop by anytime and try to intimidate me. I could use the laugh. https://newrepublic.com/post/212340/ice-pol...

/rant FFS vendors. Randomizing a MAC isn't making anyone safer. It just makes it harder for folks to manage their networks. Up next on Today's Rant, enough with blocking inbound ping. You're not hiding from network probes. #InfoSec #Security #Networking

I see that I'm exceptionally snarky this morning. Time to step outside, perhaps get a cup of coffee and a pastry. Life is better with pastries.

Events were conspiring to keep me at work today but I finally escaped. At one of my locals. It's t-shirt weather. The roil up door is up. There's a tasty beverage in front of me. Life is good. Stay strong folks. Find the little wins and enjoy the heck out of them. And keep looking out for each other. We'll get there. #Cambridge #MiracleOfScience

I've been watching the latest solar powered SkyDweller flight for the past 5 days. IMO, rather cool they've gotten to the point where they can fly remote/autonomous ~ 700mi/1100km, stay in their target area for 5+ days and then return all on electric power. The company website is https://www.skydweller.aero/ You can follow along at https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=a24b4b or https://www.flightradar24.com/N247PF #SkyDweller #Aviation #ElectricVehicles

Tired of AI agents that aren't actually intelligent causing you pain? Have you just lost data or IP because your AI assistant screwed up? I have a solution for you. I'm an actual human who understands the underlying technology. Just grant me full access to your code base, infrastructure and systems. What? You don't trust me? Why not!? You'll hand all that over to sparkling auto-carrot but not some rando on the net? Give that one some thought. #AI #Sparkling...

Snagged the last pair of bar seats at my local. SO was on their way. Musicians were just getting settled in. Food was tasty, Guinness perfectly poured and the staff was great as usual. The musicians were wonderful. Today I learned what uilleann pipes are called. I've seen them before, I just didn't know the name. I truly hope you folks have as good an end to your day and maybe learn something new as well. Stay strong. Keep looking out for each other. We'll get there....

I occasionally scroll the public feed looking for new accounts and tags. Just came across one spewing hate. Looked at the profile, 16.5k posts, 0 followers. This, right here is why the Fediverse can be such a great place. There's no algorithm promoting outrage for engagement ad revenue. I'm aware we need better protection against bullying/targeted attacks but this is a great start. #Fediverse

It was getting late yesterday and I was doing a 'net search to solve a tech problem. I couldn't find anything useful, page after page of useless results. I couldn't understand what was going on. And then I realized I was still using a test browser which defaulted to Google for search. :picardfacepalm: Hopped back to my primary browser with Kagi. Difference was night and day. I don't know how people get anything done without a decent search engine and an ad blocker in plac...

In theory, I'm an adult. That means I can choose whatever I want for dinner. So three "steam bun with pork" and a Martini it is! I'm well aware that I'm fortunate and all of my problems are first-world problems. I truly hope all you folks can say the same. Keep looking out for each other. The world can be a scary place and it's better if we don't go it alone.

Beautiful day in my part of the world today. Walked to the local library just to get out for a bit. Passed a small child riding a wheeled, stuffed unicorn kick-bike. Zipping down the park path. Totally in the moment. Loving life. Hope you folks get to experience a bit of wheeled unicorn joy today. #Cambridge

Stopped by one of my locals. I had forgotten there's a regionally significant sportsball event going on. Place was packed but the crew took care of me while I waited first my SO. Fortunate that a table opened up. A retired a couple arrived so I got to share the table with them. Shortly after, my SO walked in. We had the opportunity to make new friends and had a great evening. Life is good. Don't forget to look for each other, folks. Stay strong. We'll get there. #...

Day started early and ran long. Training with some like-minded folks. Brushed up some old skills. Learned some new ones. Serious stuff, but fun too. Stay strong folks. Keep looking out for each other. And don't forget to celebrate _all_ the wins. It doesn't matter if they're small, like skill building with your community, or large, like the one in Hungary. We'll get there eventually.

If you like real, cask ale and are in the Boston area the 25th through 28th I highly recommend checking out NERAX. It's all cask conditioned, many of which your unlikely to see anywhere else without crossing an ocean. Details, such as they are, at https://nerax.org/ (Hey, they're beer geeks not tech bros.) @knizer something for the list? #Boston #NERAX #RealAle
