Baby's first infrasound. My DIY #Infrasound experiment just produced a strong spectral feature at 3.95 Hz using a Sensirion SDP810 differential-pressure sensor + #ESP32. Did I detect a nearby train? A resonance/artifact from my 15' tube? Something else? I don't know yet -- which means it's time for more experiments. https://salemdata.net/johnpress/?p=1268 #DIY #CitizenScience #Acoustics #Sensors #OpenHardware #DataCenters

A 1-inch geophone on my basement slab just caught a mighty freight train passing about 1/4 mile away. I logged the night, found the event corresponding to my 3:34 AM eyewitness confirmation, and the seismic signal jumps dramatically. Next step: spectral analysis—how much of that ground motion is below 20 Hz? https://salemdata.net/johnpress/?p=1276 #Geophone #Seismology #Infrasound #ESP32 #DIY #DataCenters #SalemOR

My 1" geophone is telling me where the freight train energy is. Comparing a confirmed freight train with my quiet Salem baseline, I found strong sub-20 Hz ground vibration: around 10.7-10.9 Hz the maximum increased ~33 dB, and at 6.07 Hz the median increased ~21 dB. Next stop: field measurements far and near hyperscale data centers. https://salemdata.net/johnpress/?p=1288 #Geophone #Seismology #GroundVibration #FreightTrain #CitizenScience #DIYScience #DataCenters #SalemOR

I've decided to start a project to help neighbors of existing data centers and proposed data centers to monitor noise using <$300 field units. I haven't built it yet, but I have done two other monitor projects with success, so I do not anticipate this will be any different... just a different set of variables and sensors. Here's a page introducing the HDC Sound Monitor Project. (Just this page for now.) https://salemdata.net/HDC/HDC_Sound_Monitor.html #DataCenters #DIY #Noise...

Migrated from Windows to Linux leaving a Brother P-Touch label printer behind? Your printer may still be useful and work in Linux despite no mfg Linux support. My decade-old Brother PT-2700 working on Gentoo Linux with both the command-line ptouch-print utility and the graphical ptouch-rs [Rust] application. I also built ptouch-rs successfully on a Raspberry Pi 4 running Raspberry Pi OS "Trixie.". https://salemdata.net/johnpress/?p=1094 #Linux #Brother #PTouch #LabelPrinter #Gentoo...
