  Following yesterday's failed attempt at installing #NetBSD, I took another run at it with fresh eyes (and a power cable). I now have an older laptop with encrypted home, var, and usr partitions to start exploring! While getting full disk encryption baked into the installer would be nice, I have to admit I did learn a lot by poking things manually.

  Alright fedi, we've got a fun creative opportunity: After a warrantied replacement of a freezer door, we were told to dispose of the old one on our own. While we *could* take it to the recycler, it's also exceptionally weird leftover material to play with. Our first instinct was to add some framing to stand it up and make some (pun intended) cool shelving. Got any other ideas? #ThisOldClownHouse

  It took a bit more flailing to get 'nellie' willing to boot #9front from her hard drive. No matter what I tried, there was no luck with a GPT partition. On a whim I gave an MBR setup a shot. As the hackerinos say: *I'm in.* Next up, sorting out wifi. I got the firmware loaded and the card scanning last time. The problem was that I couldn't figure out how to get aux/wpa to do its thing. Be gentle with the cluebats, 9nerds.

  Today I learned that #ImageMagick has been slopped for some time. Like many tools, it's been load-bearing infrastructure for decades. Meanwhile, the #GraphicsMagick fork has been quietly chugging along for 24 years. For most of that time, it's been maintained by a single human being. That person has been asking for additional developer help for years now. While I don't have the skills to help directly, I can talk about it while I take their kindly offered toys out for a test drive....

  Some of today involved literally moving paperwork around. Most of the pile was old record keeping; now sorted and destined for the shredder. I was amused to discover proof that I was grossly underpaid for some promotional work by a well known circus. It did look impressive on my cv, and turned out to be a metric ton of fun. Current me is adding the proof to the scrapbook for that reason, and past me can have their mind blown by the client name. #SmallStories #TrueTalesOfAClownAdmin

  Today the wildfire smoke in the air from the North is thick enough to block out some of the sun beating down on #ThisOldClownHouse. It's a weirdly mixed win, as the air quality is terrible yet cooler than we feared. At the moment, I'm grateful to @SocialGaff@cathode.church for having done an excellent job of redoing the weather stripping on the doors. We're expecting some rain by the end of the weekend, so hopefully that will help both problems.

  First of May is something of a clown holiday. It was traditionally was the start of circus contracts for the year. As a result, it was also used as a way to describe inexperienced clown, similar to how we say "newbie" today. I'm happy to always be a First of May, a complete newb, or anything else that keeps my cynicism at bay.
