I was earning 16/hr 20 years ago and after state and local tax, health insurance, and mortgage it was choosing what bills wouldn’t get paid until late fees racked up. We weren’t living large, our living space was just over 1,000 square feet. 16/hr 20 years ago is equivalent to about 27/hr today.   I was not able to find a source I find reliable, but there are many sites that suggest elephants recognize individual humans and recognize guns as threats, and can even recognize a gun pointed at them is a threat. So if someone they don’t know has a gun, and we’ll never know if he aimed one at an elephant for funsies, they may have identified him as a threat and defended themselves by killing him.
